Alzheimer's Australia National Office is a national peak body providing support and advocacy for the 500,000 Australians living with dementia. The organisation offers a vast network of support groups around Australia, confidential counselling, workshops and information sessions.

Established in 1997, Alzheimer's Australia has developed as a centre of excellence in dementia support services for people with memory loss, their families and the professional staff who care for them. To increase community acceptance and understanding of dementia, the organisation also provides general education programs through seminars and courses designed to promote public awareness. Additionally, Alzheimer's Australia advocates for better services through political lobbying and monitoring of government policies and legislation.

About the Opportunity

Alzheimer's Australia National Office has a rewarding opportunity for a passionate and dedicated General Manager to join their team and lead their Policy, Program and Research department in Barton, Canberra, ACT.

Reporting to the National CEO, this role is responsible for leading the National Policy, Program and Research Team, and as a member of the Senior Management Team, supporting the President and National CEO in achieving priority for dementia in public health policy, the National Disabilities Insurance Scheme, and aged care policy. Additionally, you will be responsible for managing national programs with the objective of improving access to quality dementia care for people of all ages.  

Your main responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Preparation of funding submissions, tenders and administration of national programs to position organisation as a respected national leader in dimentia policy; 
  • Managing the policy team to ensure research and development of policy positions, reports and papers;
  • Participating in Ministerial and Official Advisory Groups;
  • Providing a governance role for project plans proposed by program managers;
  • Providing advice to the CEO on programs and projects;
  • Liaising with relevant external stakeholders;
  • Facilitating involvement of the Alzheimer’s Australia Consumer Dementia Research Network with relevant external bodies;
  • Providing strategic advice on Alzheimer’s Australia’s role in various research programs;
  • Identifying emerging issues in dementia research and research translation;
  • Providing advice and support to the National CEO, CEO group and Policy Group; and
  • Assisting the National CEO in the provision of high level strategic management and leadership to Alzheimer’s Australia; this includes representation of the National CEO as required.

To be considered for this role you will have tertiary qualifications in a relevant field as well as significant demonstrated experience managing policy, research and/or projects, preferably in a not for profit environment, or community, health or disability sectors. Additionally, you will have a sound awareness and understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, particularly the impact on quality of life for the person with dementia and their carer. Importantly, you will be able to demostrate your experience in leading, managing and mentoring small teams to work effectively and productively.

You will have comprehensive knowledge and experience in managing programs, projects and contracts with Government and other funding bodies. You'll also be able to demonstrate your experience in the development of policy and project material including policy position material, governance reports, project budget development and management.

With highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, you will be able to effectively communicate and influence people at all levels, as well as liaise and negotiate with key internal and external stakeholders. With a highly analytical mind, and well developed problem solving abilities, you will be able to work collaboratively with a diverse range of people to find the best possible outcomes.

As a highly motivated self-starter with excellent organisational and time-management skills, you will be able to take the initiative in driving new projects and work well under pressure.
