The organisation has been providing drug and alcohol treatment programs for over 35 years. They cover a range of treatment and workforce sector development services and activities through funded programs and service level partnerships.

About the Murdi Paaki Drug and Alcohol Network (MPDAN)

The MPDAN is a partnership between The Lyndon Community, Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation, Bourke Aboriginal Health Service, Coonamble Aboriginal Health Service and Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service.  Each partner receives funding from the Office of Prime Minister and Cabinet to reduce the harm done by substance use and misuse to Aboriginal Communities. The Network aims to improve access to specialist drug and alcohol treatment services and to support primary health care services in the region to provide evidence based and culturally appropriate community development, promotion, prevention, early intervention, treatment and care.

About the Opportunity

The Lyndon Community now has a fantastic opportunity for a dedicated Drug and Alcohol Health Promotion Worker to join their team in Orange, NSW. This is a 3 year funded position with the ability to extend subject to further funding.

Reporting to the Program Manager, you will play a key role in the facilitation of community wide education and programs aimed at minimising the harmful effects of substance use and misuse. You will be responsible for the implementation, evaluation and ongoing development of the Drug & Alcohol First Aid program in the MPDAN and surrounding regions.

More specifically, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing training and education to people providing health services to Aboriginal people;
  • Ensuring practice is culturally safe and reflects evidence based good practice standards;
  • Providing statistics, reports and information as required by key stakeholders, managers, and funding bodies;
  • Mentoring and supervise students, trainees and staff on placement with the clinical hub; and
  • Facilitating access to culturally appropriate and culturally safe drug and alcohol resources to support practice, such as guidelines, manuals, and self directed learning packages.

The Lyndon Community is seeking an applicant who holds tertiary qualifications in a health, education or welfare discipline. You will have a demonstrated background in health promotion project management and community management. An understanding of service delivery approaches for clients with substance use issues will be key to this role. Proven experience working with Aboriginal organisations and communities would also be beneficial to this role.

Well developed interpersonal skills will allow you to develop relationships and work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary, cross-agency and cross-cultural team. You will need to be flexible in your approach to your work, managing competing priorities with sound judgement and organisation.

The new Drug and Alcohol Health Promotion Worker will be caring, empathetic individuals with a passion and desire to help their community. However, the ability to be assertive when needed will also be necessary for these roles. It is essential you be ethical and professional when working with all individuals and communities.
