About the West Daly Regional Council

Previously part of the Victoria Daly Regional Council, the West Daly Regional Council commenced operation on July 1st, 2014, in response to an identified need to present a stronger voice and greater control over the delivery of services in the West Daly area. The new council entity covers the Wadeye-Peppimenarti-Palumpa areas and exists to serve and strengthen the community through the laws, policies and programs of Councils and the Northern Territory Government.

About the Region

Wadeye is located 420 km south-west of Northern Territory's capital, Darwin, and has the largest Aboriginal community with a population of 2,500, comprising over 20 clan groups speaking seven languages. Wadeye offers residents all the conveniences of a modern town, with a post office, grocery store, art gallery, schools, police station, healthcare and an airport with daily flights to Darwin (only 50 minutes).

About the Opportunity

West Daly Regional Council currently has an exciting position available for a dedicated, independent thinking Community Night Patrol Manager to join their team in Wadeye, NT, on a temporary 12 month contract.

Reporting to the Regional Services Manager, you will be responsible for monitoring the operation and performance of each of the Council’s community night patrol services in the communities of Wadeye, Palumpa and Peppimenarti. 

More specifically, your key responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Facilitating community engagement to ensure community night patrol services meet individual communities’ needs and priorities;
  • Facilitating management of the relationship between each community patrol and the local NT police;
  • Managing the community night patrol service’s budget allocation;
  • Facilitating links with schools and School Attendance Officers;
  • Overseeing community night patrol staff training and development;
  • Managing community night patrol staff human resource requirements; and
  • Working with the West Daly Council Grants Officer to provide the Department and Council with required reporting.

To be considered for this role, you will possess a Certificate II in Community Night Patrol and will be able to demonstrate your experience working in a similar role. You'll be able to demonstrate your experience in undertaking Community Night Patrol services, and will be able to maintain strong relationships with community members, police, funding bodies and other key stakeholders.

West Daly Regional Council is seeking a friendly and motivated candidate with well developed interpersonal skills that will allow you to communicate effectively and collaboratively within a cross-cultural environment. Importantly, you will be able to demonstrate your awareness of the issues affecting Indigenous people in remote locations.

This role will suit a leader who possesses strong strategic and decision making skills, with an analytical and innovative approach to problem solving, and the ability to effectively manage, develop and motivate staff and themselves to achieve objectives.

Most importantly, you should be able to demonstrate an ability to engage people and raise awareness about the Community Night Patrol program while calling on your consultation, networking and partnering skills across all levels.

A current Driver's Licence and Working with Children (OCHRE) Card are essential for this role, as is a sound knowledge of the principles of Occupational Health and Safety. The successful candidate will also require a National Police clearance check.

The position requires a candidate with strong personal integrity, well developed organisational and time management skills, strong oral and written communication skills and a willingness to live and travel to remote communities.
