About the Organisation

The Southern Aboriginal Corporation, incorporated in 1983, delivers cultural and effective business and resource delivery activities for the Noongar people of the Great Southern. In cooperation with other community and business organisations, the SAC provides services and programs that improve and achieve Noongar needs and aspirations.

The SAC Family Violence Prevention Legal Service (FVPLS) program provides legal services for victims/survivors of family violence and sexual assault. The program offers legal representation for family law and child protection issues, assistance with criminal injuries compensation claims and counselling support.

The SAC FVPLS promotes and supports prevention methods and awareness within the community and families through workshops, forums, expos and community displays.

About the Opportunity

The SAC now has a fantastic opportunity for a devoted Principal Solicitor to join their FVPLS team in Albany, WA. This is a full time role, overseeing a solicitor and a paralegal.

Reporting to the Safety and Well Being Manager, you will primarily be responsible for the development and maintenance of the legal service and overall supervision of the FVPLS legal practice. You will do this by applying best practice standards to the delivery of the unit's legal services with an understanding of the culturally sensitive issues around family violence prevention. 

More specifically, some of your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing, participating and evaluating the development of initiatives to improve community awareness of FVPLS;
  • Ensuring the legal practice meets all standards, guidelines and policies;
  • Providing quality legal advice, representation and referral to clients;
  • Consulting and supporting community initiatives to reduce the incidence of family violence within the indigenous community; and
  • Creating monthly management reports on outcomes achieved.

To be successful in this position it is essential you hold a Bachelor of Law or equivalent qualifications, along with admittance or eligibility for admittance as a legal practitioner in WA. As FVPLS provides legal services in the area of family law, you will have demonstrated experience in this area. Your ability to conduct litigation and manage large caseloads will be key to your success in this role. 

An analytical approach to problem solving will aid you in conflict resolution and your excellent interpersonal skills will allow you to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team. Importantly, you will have the demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people. Proven experience working in these communities will be highly regarded.

Please Note: A current driver's license is a requirement of this position as you will be providing outreach to surrounding areas. Applicants must also be prepared to undergo a Prior Offender History Check.
