About the Opportunity

Balonne Shire Council has a fantastic opportunity for a mature and professional Town Planner to join their multidisciplinary team in St George, QLD.

Reporting to the Director - Community and Environmental Sustainability, you will be primarily responsible for carrying out land use planning functions

More specifically, some of your responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Providing advice on matters related to planning for the use and development of land within the Council;
  • Ensuring the Council's statutory obligations are met;
  • Processing planning, building and plumbing applications in liaison with technical consultants; 
  • Contributing to the preparation of planning reports, policies and amendments; and
  • Preparing submissions regarding strategic planning matters.

Balonne Shire Council is seeking a candidate who holds tertiary qualifications in urban planning or a related field. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of contemporary land use planning and assessment practices is essential. This will enable you to interpret and apply policies, procedures and legislative requirements to your projects.

Additionally, you must have a solid understanding of, or the ability to quickly acquire knowledge of, the Queensland planning system and duties associated with processing statutory development applications. This includes the operation of the Sustainable Planning Act 2009. Although not essential, experience in a local authority will be looked upon favourably.

The ability to develop and implement solutions to problems, with the outcome of achieving effective results, will be key to your success. Your exceptional interpersonal skills will allow you to liaise with clients of all levels in a culturally diverse environment. They will also ensure you work collaboratively with other staff members while maintaining influence over your projects. Although you will be provided with support from a Brisbane-based consultant, you will primarily be working independently. It is crucial you are able to stay focused and self-motivated on a daily basis. Excellent communication skills with a high level of organisation and attention to detail will also come in handy when preparing submissions and project reports.

Please Note: This position requires a current Queensland "C" Class Driver's License.

In return for your hard work and dedication, you will receive an attractive base salary circa $66,693 - $68,989 plus super (9.5% on commencement, moving to 6% employee and 12% employer after 12 months).
