About the Opportunity

McKinlay Shire Council has an exciting opportunity for a WHS & Risk Management Officer to join their friendly team, based in Julia Creek, QLD.

Reporting to the Director Corporate and Community Services, you will be responsible for assisting in the implementation, coordination and promotion of Council's Safety Management System, in accordance with relevant legislation and policies. This will include identifying and analysing existing / potential risks and developing, assessing and administering policies, procedures and work practices to address these.

More specifically, your duties will include (but may not be limited to):

  • Providing guidance, advice and support to the CEO, Directors, Managers, supervisors and employees of the McKinlay Shire Council in the area of Work Health and Safety (WHS);
  • Ensuring compliance with Council's WHS management system and legislative requirements by coordinating programs, conducting audits and providing training / education to staff;
  • Overseeing and managing Council's Risk Management System, including developing a Risk Register reflecting Council’s operations and assets;
  • Coordinating the development, review and implementation of Council’s risk management strategy and program;
  • Producing timely and accurate information to assist with planning / policy development, programs and safety management system evaluation and legislative impact assessment; and
  • Assisting relevant staff to investigate circumstances surrounding insurance claims involving council.

This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified WHS professional to join a thriving regional Council in an integral role.

The ideal applicant will have relevant qualifications in Occupational Health & Safety (Cert IV or higher) and Workplace Training & Assessment (Cert IV or higher), as well as a current First Aid Certificate. You'll have direct experience working in Workplace Health & Safety and with Risk Management Systems, coupled with the ability to interpret and apply legislation to ensure compliance. Importantly, you'll also have knowledge of hazard and risk identification, assessment and control.

McKinlay Shire Council is seeking applications from critical thinkers, who can use their initiative and problem-solving skills to make sound decisions and recommendations to Council. You'll have strong researching skills, including the ability to analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources to make recommendations that align with Council's legislative and budgetary requirements. Sound knowledge of WHS legislation, relevant Australian standards and Codes of Practice are essential, as is effective communication skills (both written and verbal) and the ability to prepare reports, policies and documentation.

Please note: Candidates must have a current 'C' class driver's licence and current construction White Card (or eligibility to obtain). The successful applicant will also be expected to obtain a Certificate in Risk Management.
