About the Organisation

NG Media is a thriving Indigenous-owned media organisation supporting 14 remote Aboriginal communities in the Western Desert region of Western Australia. NG Media programs include training in and production of radio and film, music development, archiving, language recording, IT, and technical broadcasting services.

Yarnangu (Aboriginal people of the region) are using modern media and communications technologies in ways that are meaningful and relevant to their rapidly evolving culture, and to tell their own stories using their own voice. NG Media also works with Yarnangu to preserve their cultural heritage through the recording of traditional songs, dances and stories.

NG Media is based in their superbly equipped multi-million dollar Media Centre in Wingellina Community. It is the only service provider of its kind in the region and has grown substantially over the last ten years through the extension of programs and the growing demand for its services and products. The organisation has a strong history of Yarnangu ownership and participation in its programs, and has a good knowledge of community needs and aspirations.

About the Region

The Ngaanyatjarra Lands are at the junction of the Great Victoria and Gibson deserts, in the far east of Western Australia, adjoining the Northern Territory and South Australia borders. This area spans over 250,000 sq/kms with a population of over 2,000 people living in 15 communities.

The landscape of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands is extremely diverse; there is dense sand dune country, mountain ranges and vast spinifex plains. Among the overwhelming scale of the landscape are the rockholes, soakwaters (underground water), creeks, salt lakes and claypans that feature in many local artworks and traditional stories as sites of significance.

Wingellina, where this position is based, is a small remote Aboriginal community with a population of approximately 150. It is situated 12km from the tri-state border (WA-NT-SA), 850kms South-West of Alice Springs. The Ngaanyatjarra Lands, including Wingellina, are “dry” (no alcohol permitted).

About the Opportunity

Ngaanyatjarra Media has an excellent opportunity for a radio producer to take up the role of Network Coordinator / Trainer in their remote community media centre.

This is a highly unique and rewarding role, in which you'll coordinate the day-to-day production and programming of Radio NGM — a network of remote Indigenous community radio stations — and work to improve the rate and quality of community member participation, through training, networking and capacity building.

While you'll be provided with housing in Wingellina, the role will involve travelling extensively and working closely with communities throughout the region, to deliver radio training and support. Your ultimate goal will be to improve the scope and quality of current radio content, as well as recruit and train new presenters and media workers in the technical and communication skills needed to broadcast their own voice and stories to the region.

More specifically, some of your key deliverables will involve ensuring:

  • Radio NGM's 24/7 program schedule is maintained;
  • At least 25 hours or more of live broadcast is achieved each week;
  • Daily and annual broadcasts targets for National Indigenous News and community service announcements are met;
  • Training is delivered to staff and students of the 9 Ngaanyatjarra Lands schools, enabling them to broadcast two items per term; and
  • Applications are made for relevant funding and grants.

Your time will be split between maintaining and improving Radio NGM's content and scheduling, and imparting industry knowledge and skills to communities, through workshops and hands-on training. Many of the shows produced will be played nationally through the ABC and other broadcasters, making this a fantastic opportunity to cement your radio production and coordination experience and your longer term media career.

Reporting to the General Manager, this position is offered on a contract basis until June 30th, 2017 (with option to renew subject to funding), and includes a 3 month probation period.

About You

To be successful in this highly diverse and career-defining role, you'll need demonstrated skills in radio production and presenting, as well as the ability to effectively lead and train others. You'll have solid knowledge of radio production and broadcasting, studio equipment set-up / operation and relevant software applications, as well as an understanding of community broadcasting codes of practice. Given the daily need to connect remote broadcasters to the hub radio station, the ability to learn and use Tieline equipment is also vital. Experience in community radio will be highly regarded, as will qualifications in Training & Assessment.

Given the role's focus, it's essential that you're able to manage projects and develop and deliver culturally appropriate training in radio content production and technical skills. You'll be liaising extensively with local community representatives to identify opportunities for new and expanded content or participation; therefore, you will require well developed management skills, including strong planning, reporting and organisational skills, and effective problem-solving, conflict resolution and team building abilities.

Ngaanyatjarra Media is looking for a patient, mature person with a high standard of personal and professional conduct, with highly developed written and oral communication skills, including the ability to prepare funding submissions. You'll be ready to work with traditional indigenous people in a dry remote community and have the ability to effectively communicate with diverse groups, from Yarnangu communities, staff and management, government and other non-Yarnangu agencies. Previous experience working with Indigenous people and in communities will be highly beneficial.

In this role, it will be beneficial to have a demonstrated understanding of the political, social and economic factors that affect Indigenous people. Candidates should have an understanding of the challenges of living and working in a cross-cultural environment in a remote location, and all applicants require a current manual driver's licence and good physical fitness. Although not essential, 4WD off-road driving experience is strongly desired.

About the Benefits

This is a unique opportunity for a highly adaptable radio professional with a great deal of self-reliance and an open, collaborative training style. You will work with a close-knit team of dedicated media practitioners and trainers while living in a spectacular and challenging region of Australia that most people never get the chance to see. If you have the drive and vision to expand the creative and cultural output of the indigenous population, this is the job for you!

The successful applicant will enjoy an attractive remuneration (negotiated based on qualifications and experience) plus $4,333 district allowance!

In addition, Ngaanyatjarra Media will provide furnished accommodation and utilities, both at base and within communities AND annual airfares! You will also receive 4 weeks annual leave (with 17% leave loading), plus 4 weeks additional leave! A 4WD will also be provided, as well as 4WD driver training if required.

If you love a challenge, thrive on a busy and varied schedule and would love the chance to make a positive difference in a remote Aboriginal community, this is the opportunity for you.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are encouraged to apply.
