About the Opportunity

The Town of Drayton Valley is seeking an experienced Managing Director (Clean Energy & Technology Centre) to join our dedicated team in Central West Alberta on a full time basis. 

In this key leadership role, you will lead the Clean Energy & Technology Centre (CETC), aiming to create a centre of knowledge and innovation and focusing on clean technology industries. Reporting, and accountable to the CETC Management Committee (a joint venture of NorQuest College and the Town of Drayton Valley), you will deliver on the CETC mandate and manage all operational components of the CETC as noted in the Joint Venture Agreement. This will involve positioning the CETC as a business incubator to support economic development for the Drayton Valley Region (100 km radius).

Your key responsibilities will include:

Business Incubation & Revenue Generation

  • Identify industry driven clean energy commercialization needs
  • Generate and cultivate business opportunities
  • Lead CETC business incubation activities including supporting tenant entrepreneurs through business training and administrative support
  • Develop, offer and deliver a suite of services to start-up businesses including; drop down office space, standing office space, phone answering, fax and photocopy services, basic accounting services, conference room services, and administrative (secretarial) services
  • Develop and implement an operational model in alignment with the CETC Strategic growth plan to ensure entrepreneurs have the opportunity to participate in research, commercialization and business skill development
  • Ensure entrepreneurs receive advice and direction from business experts and mentors as they establish themselves in the clean energy community.

Business Development

  • Position and represent the CETC in the local, regional, provincial, national and international spheres
  • Identify and nurture all business and economic development opportunities for the CETC and the BioMile
  • Deliver products, programs and services to CETC customers
  • Identify possible investors who may consider bringing their clean energy and technology related ventures to Drayton Valley
  • Consider opportunities for research to be done within the CETC
  • Create leads and attain membership into the CETC
  • Identify and secure sources of funding from industry, government and other partners to support education and training, research, and operations of the CETC, facilities, etc.
  • Establish and coordinate facility rental plans.

Education and Training

  • Identify needs of target groups including clean energy professionals, individual learners, Bio-Mile employees and employers, high school graduates and international graduate students
  • Coordinate the development of curriculum and delivery on corporate and non-credit training and develop a rolling three-year program plan
  • Liaise with NorQuest College on all training and refer credit education opportunities to NorQuest
  • Establish and maintain strong relations with other learning providers, community organizations, government (Ministry of Innovation and Advanced Education) and other key educational stakeholders (other post-secondary institutions).
  • Develop a series of supporting educational opportunities including, but not limited to, conferences, seminars and workshops, webinars and other forms learning
  • Validate new non-credit and corporate program requests and other learning opportunities to ensure they will be in demand by both learners and employers
  • Identify opportunities for grants, educational and service contracts, and donations to offset cost of delivery
  • Identify possible opportunities for industry, government, research organizations and academia to utilize the conference services at the CETC
  • Establish and maintain community relations for marketing educational programs and services to potential students, influencers and employers.

Research

  • Lead the development and promotion of the CETC’s identity and capacity in both pure and applied research and developing the research infrastructure and activity base of the centre
  • Identify opportunities, and work with industry and NorQuest College to ensure viability of research questions
  • Lead proposal writing and/or support proposal writing of faculty
  • Identify, secure and manage research funding
  • Oversee and facilitate research staff and students in developing research proposals, submission to funders and final reporting
  • Recruit, hire, supervise and train the research students and staff
  • Support NorQuest College’s participation in collaborative research with other post-secondary institutions, government agencies, and industry
  • Gain national and international recognition for innovative research which in turn results in additional funding.

Ancillary Services

  • Develop and manage CETC support services including marketing and communications, and financial and human resource management
  • Oversee the development of the CETC web site including content to build a community of practice, and act as a portal for research and training components

Staffing & Manpower

  • Provide leadership on operational matters pertaining to growth of the CETC
  • Provides expert knowledge regarding clean energy needs and activities and influences and leads process across the CETC including all component initiatives
  • Hire, train and evaluate staff.

This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and proactive individual who has a graduate degree in business, economic and community development or related field and/or equivalent experience. 7-10 years of experience in increasingly responsible roles in the areas of business development, education and research is essential, as is expertise in business start-up and revenue generation. You must be experienced and comfortable achieving aggressive deliverables. Your key function areas should include: revenue generation, strategic and operational planning, business best practices, budget development and management, organizational development, stakeholder relations, project management, research, business incubation and marketing.

You will be an excellent fit if you have experience delivering medium to complex projects planning, contract negotiation and management and are familiar with Clean Energy sector on a local, national and international level. 

Flexible and proactive, you are able to adapt to the structure, operational and decision making processes of joint venture partners while fostering strategic alliances with academia, industry, government and funding agencies. You thrive on analyzing complex issues, synthesizing findings and identifying strategic and tactical actions and solutions.

You are also well equipped with superior oral/written communication and presentation skills, and you are capable of negotiating and communicating with project partners while building/fostering strong working relationships.

More importantly, this is a key opportunity for a risk taker who is able to adapt while making sound decisions and recommendations that align with strategic and operational plans. A valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
