About the Organisation

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC), formerly Mt Theo Program, was started by Yuendumu Community in 1993 to address chronic petrol sniffing in Yuendumu. WYDAC achieved unprecedented community success in this initial struggle, which led to considerable growth in the scope of the services provided. WYDAC now provides a comprehensive range of programs that deliver diversion, development, treatment, and leadership services throughout the Warlpiri region.

WYDAC was created by, and for, Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Warlpiri Committee. WYDAC head office is located in Yuendumu Community, and the organisation has permanent staffing and operations at five different Warlpiri sites – Yuendumu, Willowra, Nyirrpi, Lajamanu remote communities and Mt Theo Outstation. The notable and sustainable success of the program has been firmly based on the support and strength of local Warlpiri youth and their communities, as well as the ongoing commitment of staff.

About the Location

Located in remote Central Australia NT, Yuendumu, Lajamanu and Willowra are three local communities - primarily inhabited by Warlpiri people. Each of the small towns have a full range of amenities including a community health centre, police station, sporting facilities, youth centre, and primary school.

About the Opportunities

The Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has a unique opportunity for a number of Male Youth Development Workers to join their teams in the remote communities of Yuendumu and Lajamanu, NT.

Reporting to a Youth Program Coordinator, you'll be providing a program of diversionary and development activities responsive to the needs of the male youth in the community. The activities provide daily opportunities for engagement with healthy and positive diversionary activities, which in turn prevents Warlpiri youth from youth-at-risk activity. Youth development activities build the resilience, confidence and skills of young Warlpiri men and women in a culturally appropriate manner, to assist them to develop to their full potential. 

More specifically, some of your key duties will include:

  • Engaging with and creating close relationships with “at risk” Indigneous males and encouraging their participation in youth activities;
  • Monitoring at risk youth for changes in behaviour that may indicate a problem; 
  • Making referrals to WYDAC Counsellors and/or Outstation Coordinator as necessary;
  • Providing regular reporting and written information regarding participation and youth program development; and
  • Being responsive to feedback and ideas from local trainees and community team.

Please note that this position requires someone willing and able to work in a remote area, and who understands and is sensitive to the unique requirements of working within an Indigenous community. It can be a tough job at times, but the satisfaction from 'a job well done' is significant. To be successful you will hold relevant tertiary qualifications in youth work, social work, or similar, and will experience working with at-risk youth. Additionally, you will have experience in the development and management of recreational activities.

Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation are after individuals who are prepared to step in and get their hands dirty with the program participants. You'll love getting outside and leading youth activities and will have a passion for creating opportunities for young people in a remote location, using your resourcefulness and self-motivation on a regular basis.

You'll be an excellent communicator, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to forge strong relationships with both the youth of the community, as well as a range of internal and external stakeholders. The ability to work effectively withing a cross cultural and cross disciplinary team. You'll need to be confident making decisions independently and also be able to manage stressful situations as they arise.

You'll have solid administrative skills, and will be computer literate with a proven knowledge of spreadsheets and databases.

A current C class driver's licence, Working With Children Check (Ochre Card), and a Police Check are all essential to being considered. Candidates with a Senior First Aid Certificate, as well as sport and / or creative skills will be highly regarded, however these are not essential for this role.
