About the Organisation
The Central Land Council (CLC) is a Commonwealth Government statutory authority covering the entire southern half of the Northern Territory - an area of 776,549 square kilometres. The Council consists of 90 Aboriginal people elected from communities in the southern half of the Northern Territory. More than 200 people work at the CLC and at least half of its employees are Aboriginal.
The Central Land Council provides a number of services for the benefit of traditional owners and other Aboriginal residents of the CLC region, including:
- Providing a strong voice for the Aboriginal people of Central Australia.
- Helping Aboriginal people get back country.
- Helping Aboriginal people manage their land.
- Consulting with landowners on mining activity, employment, development and other land use proposals.
- Protecting Aboriginal culture and sacred sites.

- Fighting for legal recognition of Aboriginal people's rights.
- Helping resolve land disputes, native title claims and compensation cases.
- Running the permit system for visitors to Aboriginal land.
About the Opportunity
Take advantage of this rewarding opportunity to bring your ecology, natural resource management or anthropology skills to a senior position as the Coordinator of the Northern Tanami Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) in Lajamanu, NT, in a full time role. The successful candidate will initially be based in Alice Springs for training and induction. Accommodation will be provided.
Reporting to the Manager – Land Management, you will coordinate the implementation of indigenous land management on Aboriginal land in the Northern Tanami region of the NT. Based in Lajamanu, the IPA coordinator will work with regional traditional owners, the North Tanami Aboriginal Rangers, and wider community to:
- Implement the Northern Tanami Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) Plan of Management and facilitate on-going management planning; and
- Integrate the North Tanami Aboriginal Ranger group into Plan of Management implementation and other cultural and natural resource management opportunities in the region.
As the senior position operating out of the Lajamanu Office, this position is also responsible for ensuring the office functions as a professional and safe working environment for constituents and staff.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in an indigenous land management role with experience in natural resource management or anthropology. Working with the indigenous community, candidates with demonstrated experience with community based planning in natural resource management will be highly regarded. Collaborating with traditional owners, you'll need a thorough understanding of cultural diversity and the issues facing indigenous communities. Prior remote area experience will be highly beneficial.
Liaising with key stakeholders and project partners, you'll need strong management skills as you oversee the planning and implementation of the IPA project. You'll need strong written and verbal communication as well as the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the community as you liaise, negotiate and facilitate meetings with all parties. Your demonstrated project management experience is essential for your success in this position as you autonomously deliver project plans on time and within budget constraints.
As an individual, you'll have a high professional and ethical standards with an ability to build rapport with a broad range of individuals and organisations, analyse and solve problems with flexibility and good humour, and a capacity for persistence and resilience in a challenging social, political and physical environment.
You'll need a reasonable degree of physical fitness, a current drivers license with four-wheel driving experience as well as the ability to travel, live and work in remote locations as a regular part of the job and conduct extended field work involving traditional land owners, staff, and others.
