About the Opportunity

The Shire of Halls Creek has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Youth Development Officer with a sense of adventure to live and work within an Aboriginal community. You'll form part of the dynamic Shire of Halls Creek Youth Services Diversionary Program team.

Reporting to the Youth Services Team Leader, the main aim of this rewarding role will be to provide an outreach service to support young people to improve their quality of life, to participate to their maximum potential in social, recreational, educational and vocational activities. In doing so, you will be assisting to empower young people to build on their knowledge, appreciate their cultural inheritance and make positive life choices.

More specifically, some of your duties will include:

  • Providing an outreach client-centred casework service and ongoing case management support to young people with complex trauma histories and complex needs, including safety, mental health, alcohol and other drug issues;
  • Working closely with representatives from all program areas to develop, coordinate, implement and monitor client initiatives, with the ultimate goal of improving the health and well being of young people within WA;
  • Maintaining up to date knowledge of local and broader youth issues and working collaboratively with young people, agencies, government bodies and the community to address these issues;
  • Participating in the planning, development and delivery of effective programming to meet the community outcomes of the program;
  • Developing cultural protocols for working with the different language groups in the community; and
  • Liaising with community stakeholders to identify gaps and duplication of services.

To be successful in this role, you will have experience or qualifications in Youth Studies, Social Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, or Law and Justice, along with a good understanding of the contemporary context and experiences of young people. This pivotal role requires a well organised team player with exceptional time management and problem solving skills who has a proven understanding of youth work principles, practices, knowledge, skills and ethics, preferably with awareness of the issues faced by youth in remote areas, particularly Aboriginal youth.  Previous experience in a similar, hands-on role is key to your success, as is a background involving working with Aboriginal children.

A clear understanding of the challenges that you may face living and working in a remote community is essential. 

The successful applicant will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to work effectively with children and young people aged between 10 to 25 years. In addition, you will have a proven background in being able to work collaboratively with colleagues, young people, members of the local community and external agencies and stakeholders. You will need sound computer literacy skills, including a working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer. 

The Shire of Halls Creek is seeking applications from candidates who can think on their feet and are confident in handling stressful situations calmly. Applicants with knowledge of the Kimberley region will be highly regarded.

The ability to work autonomously is essential in this role, as is a working knowledge of information technology and community development principles and practices. It is mandatory that all applicants possess a current C class manual driver's licence enabling them to drive a manual car, a current working with Children check (or willingness to obtain one), and the preparedness to undergo a Police Check and Department of Corrective Services Six Monthly Employee Checks.
