The Shire of Paroo is a local government area in South West Queensland, approximately 800km south west of Brisbane and 120km from the NSW border. 

The Paroo Shire covers an area of 47,714.5 square kilometres (18,422.7 sq mi), with the majority of the approx. 2,000 residents, and the Council administrative centre, based in Cunnamulla.

About life in Cunnamulla

Cunnamulla, meaning long stretch of water, gets its name from the picturesque Warrego River which meanders past and is a popular spot for fishing and water sports. The main industries within the Shire are beef, fat lamb and wool production, apiary, grapes, wildlife harvesting, opal mining and the ever increasing Tourism Industry. Cunnamulla is serviced twice a week by REX (Regional Express) from Brisbane and three times a week by Bus and Coaches from Toowoomba.

A large number of services are available within Cunnamulla including two primary schools and one secondary school, medical centre, hospital, library, swimming pool, four churches and houses of worship, hotels, motels, bowling club, golf club, coffee shops and much more.

As well as the bowling club and golf club there are a number of strong sporting clubs and social activities such as the triathlon club, polocrosse, gun club, tennis and swimming club. A number of events are held throughout the year from race meetings to the annual show-with the highlight of each year being the annual "Cunnamulla Fella Festival". 

About the Opportunity

Paroo Shire Council now has an exciting opportunity for a Manager Infrastructure to join their team based in Cunnamulla, QLD, on a full time, 4 year fixed term basis.

Reporting to the CEO, you will be primarily responsible for the overall management of Council's Works Department, acting as the primary link between the CEO and the Infrastructure Department. You will provide leadership to staff in the Works Department to achieve objectives and goals, as well as communicating and promoting relevant policies and procedures within the Works Department.

Your day-to-day activities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Developing and maintaining an annual works program;
  • Developing and maintaining a road development strategy as part of council's ten year asset management program;
  • Assisting with the development of the Plant Replacement Program including purchase of relevant fleet to meet council needs;
  • Providing professional advice and reports to Council including the delivery of the annual work program, budget submissions and other funded work as required; and
  • Providing assistant to the Chief Executive Officer in financial and resource planning for the best utilisation of resources both internal and external.

To be successful in this position you will have tertiary qualifications as a Civil Engineer and demonstrated experience as a project manager within civil construction. You will have a strong technical ability, as well as an 'eye for the real world' - understanding that things that work in big cities are not necessarily going to work in a small town in Western QLD, and planning unique solutions accordingly. 

As you will have a number of direct reports, strong leadership and communication skills are a must, as is the ability to quickly command respect from the team on the ground, by getting amongst it and rolling your sleeves up to assist when required to get the job done. 

Previous experience in a Local Government context would be highly desired, however is not mandatory for your success in this position. 

More importantly, you will be an outgoing, motivated person who wants to become part of the local community and can engage effectively with people of all backgrounds and ages.
