About the Organisation

Central Desert Regional Council is located in Alice Springs, Northern Territory and covers an area of approximately 283,000 square kms.  The Council itself is relatively young as it was formed in 2008 through the amalgamation of a number of small community councils.  

Central Desert Regional Council services the communities of Ti Tree, Laramba, Engawala, Harts Range, Yuelamu, Nyirripi, Lajamanu, Yuendumu and Willowra.

About Yuendumu

Located 293km northwest of Alice Springs, Yuendumu ranks as one of the larger remote communities in central Australia. With a population of approximately 817 people, Yuendumu is a community made up largely of the Warlpiri and Anmatyerr Aboriginal people and boasts a thriving community of Aboriginal artists. 

Yuendumu is located within the Yuendumu Aboriginal Lands Trust area on traditional Anmatyerr and Warlpiri land and includes numerous outstations. 

About the Opportunity

Central Desert Regional Council has a fantastic opportunity for a Team Leader - Roads to join their team based at Yuendumu, NT, on a full time basis.

Operating under the direction of the Roads Manager and in accordance with Council corporate plans, policies, strategies and relevant legislation this position is responsible for the on-ground management of Council’s road maintenance and upgrade operations, including the safe, efficient and secure operation of Council’s road plant, equipment, and vehicles.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Undertake and/or support the counselling, mentoring and/or training of Indigenous road crew employees to improve and optimise their skills, outputs and attendance in a cross-cultural environment;
  • Manage the day-to-day on-ground operations of Council’s road plant, equipment and vehicles. Ensure all are properly serviced, maintained and in good working order, including pre-start checks and arranging emergency repairs;
  • Work with the Roads Manager to determine and implement the most effective and efficient manner in which the Council’s goals, objectives and programs are delivered within the road crew;
  • Provide day-to-day point-of-contact and liaison for road contractors engaged by Council; and
  • Supervise and lead Council employees and co-ordinate resources to undertake a range of works/projects in the community.

The successful candidate will have proven experience in the management, maintenance and operation of roads vehicles, plant and equipment, as well as the ability to manage, lead and mentor a road crew, preferably in a cross-cultural environment. An empathy towards, and awareness of, issues affecting Aboriginal people in remote locations, is also key to your success in this position. 

This is an excellent opportunity for an existing person in the industry to build or cement their professional skills as a high level team leader. It is a unique opportunity to grow the ability of local Indigenous communities and staff so they can perform their own road works through full-time, meaningful, skilled employment.

This position is based at Yuendumu, operating predominantly in the Yuendumu region, however you will be required to spend some time onsite with the roads crew.
