Katherine, with a population of over 9,200, is situated 300 km southeast of Darwin in the "Top End", the third largest community in the Northern Territory. About the Opportunity 

Victoria Daly Regional Council has a unique opportunity for a full-time Governance Officer to join their regional office based in Katherine, NT.

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, you will primarily be responsible for overseeing the establishment and ongoing implementation of good governance structures and processes throughout the Victoria Daly Regional Council.

More specifically, some of your duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Attending Local Authority meets;
  • Establishing and supporting the Local Authorities and Councillors in achieving projects and good governance outcomes;
  • Assisting with the co-ordination of Local Authority meetings;
  • Ensuring performance reporting and reviewing for Local Authorities;
  • Ensuring capacity building and training for elected members and staff on governance issues;
  • Managing the development and production of the Council’s Regional Plan; and
  • Managing and coordinating the Council’s Women’s Program, ensuring strong linkages are made throughout the Council;

To be considered as a candidate it is essential that you have a relevant tertiary qualification or experience in Business, Community Development, or Governance. You will also be required to hold a current Criminal History Check (within the last 3 months), a Working with Children Card, and a current Driver’s License. You must be willing to travel to communities and stay overnight.

To be successful in this role you will have demonstrated experience in managing the affairs of a Local Government Authority and/or Organisation. You must have the ability to engage, consult, and negotiate sensitively and effectively with Indigenous people, as well as being able to liaise effectively with a variety of stakeholders and resolve conflict. You will possess a thorough knowledge of relevant legislation appropriate to the Local Government, and a sound knowledge of the principles of Occupations Health and Safety. An understanding of business and legal planning principles and practices is also highly desirable. You take an analytical and innovative approach to problem solving, and are able to confidently make strategic decisions.

As this role will require a certain amount of reporting and record-keeping you must also possess a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain office administration systems, and have an advanced understanding of Microsoft Work, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
