About the Organisation

The West Daly Regional Council commenced operation on July 1st, 2014, in response to an identified need to present a stronger voice and greater control over the delivery of services in the West Daly area. The new council entity covers the Wadeye-Peppimenarti-Palumpa areas and exists to serve and strengthen the community through the relevant acts and legislation, policies and programs of Councils and the Northern Territory Government.

To help establish and grow West Daly Regional Council, the organisation is currently recruiting people who share their vision to deliver services and prosperity that represent the people it services. 

About the Region

Wadeye is located 420 km south-west of Northern Territory's capital, Darwin, and has the largest Aboriginal community with a population of 2,500, comprising over 20 clan groups speaking seven languages. Wadeye offers residents all the conveniences of a modern town, with a post office, grocery store, art gallery, schools, police station, healthcare and an airport with daily flights to Darwin (only 50 minutes). Wadeye is known for some of the best fishing in the Territory. There are also plenty of town activities held on a regular basis such as football games. 

About the Opportunity

West Daly Regional Council currently has an exciting leadership opportunity for a Director of Community Services to join their team in Wadeye, NT. This role is being offer on a fixed, full-time basis, with a maximum term contract of 24 months.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, you will provide responsible, efficient and effective management and financial and administrative services for the Council’s non core-functions, which help to achieve the delivery of Council’s Strategic Directions. These functions include aged care, sport and recreation, libraries, broadcasting and other funded services.

The Director of Community is an integral part of the Executive Management Team, which provides clarity of direction, effective service support, advice and guidance to the CEO, with the ultimate goal of improving the West Daly Regional Council. 

More specifically, your key responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Providing support and advice to the CEO to develop, analyse, determine and implement strategies which will enable Council’s obligations and responsibilities to be fulfilled;
  • Contributing to the development of the corporate and community strategic planning process within Council;
  • Ensuring the development of the Business Plan for non core service delivery reflects the strategic direction of Councils commitment to Customer Service levels;
  • Contributing to the maintenance of a healthy and sound governance environment across the organisation;
  • Managing the finance and assets of the Directorate in accordance with approved delegation and budgets.

To be considered for this position, you will possess a Degree in Accounting, Commerce or similar and a thorough knowledge of the NT Local Government Act and Regulations, with extensive experience in local government functions and its financial requirements. 

With highly developed leadership and management skills, you'll be able to lead, manage and develop staff from a range of backgrounds and in a cross-cultural context, in order to achieve set outputs. 

The successful candidate will also have a commitment to, and the ability, to provide superior quality customer service. Your keen interpersonal and communication skills will ensure you are able to build strong relationships with your internal and external stakeholders and apply cultural sensitivities if and when required. 

Importantly, you'll have a strong understanding of business and financial planning principles and practices in order to maintain ongoing budget reports and manage core services within budget constraints. 

A current Northern Territory driver's licence is essential for this role.
