About the Organisation

Focus ACT is a not-for-profit non-government Incorporated Association that offers housing and accommodation support to adults who have an intellectual disability. Focus currently provides over 60,000 hours of direct support annually, with the level of support ranging from providing basic assistance for daily living and managing a home, to intensive 24-hour help.

The organisation aims to assist people with a disability to choose how they want to live, establish and maintain their own home in the community, and manage their daily lives.

About the Opportunity

Focus ACT has several opportunities available for Grade 2 Accommodation Support Workers to join their friendly team in Deakin, Canberra, on a casual basis. We are looking for Support Workers who are available for rosters that include - week days, evenings, sleep over and weekend shifts. 

Your various responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting individuals to develop independent living skills to manage their own home (e.g. shopping, meal preparation);
  • Providing assistance with domestic duties and personal care;
  • Assisting individuals to manage their medications and well being; and
  • Assisting and encouraging individuals to develop and maintain their social relationships.

Experience of working with people with a disability would be highly advantageous, however is not essential, as training will be provided for successful candidates.

Importantly, you will be a caring individual with a non-judgmental attitude, and an understanding of the lifestyle support requirements of people with intellectual disabilities. To be successful in this role you must have strong communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work in challenging situations, both autonomously and as part of a team.

It is essential that you have a First Aid Certificate (or are willing to obtain prior to employment), hold a current driver’s license, and have your own car with comprehensive motor vehicle insurance. You will also be required to hold a current Working With Vulnerable People registration.
