About the Organisation

Beginning operations in 1980, the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA) was the first Aboriginal group to be allocated a broadcasting licence. The Aboriginal people of Central Australia own CAAMA through an association and have clear objectives focused on the social, cultural and economic advancement of Aboriginal people.

CAAMA promotes Aboriginal culture, language, dance and music while generating economic benefits in the form of training, employment and income generation. About the Opportunity

The Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association has an exciting full-time opportunity for a Senior Journalist to join their team in Alice Springs, NT.  

In this role, you will be responsible for presenting and producing daily content for radio and online media with a focus on issues in the Alice Springs area, greater Territory region, and issues that impact on Aboriginal people. You will also assist with editing and sub-editing duties as required by the Editor-at-Large.

Your main responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Preparing and presenting daily content for the Strong Voices program;
  • Producing regular feature material;
  • Moderating social media accounts in conjunction with CAAMA staff;
  • Contributing to the operational and administration activities of CAAMA radio;
  • Working with the Editor-at-Large to mentor and provide guidance to the cadet journalist; and
  • Reporting and presenting other program content from remote locations as required.

To be successful in this role, you will have minimum of 5 years experience in radio or broadcast media and have exceptional editorial skills. You will also hold - or be working towards completion of - a tertiary qualification in journalism, mass communications or equivalent.

You will display a strong level of journalistic initiative and instinct and have the ability to conduct engaging and effective interviews. You must also have the ability to work effectively and accurately under pressure and to strict deadlines with minimal supervision.

Candidates will need to be effective at conducting their own research and also have the ability to provide sound input into shaping programming to build and maintain audience satisfaction.

You will have proven knowledge of issues affecting Indigenous people and an understanding of cultural protocols relating to Indigenous people. A willingness to undertake training in Central Australia specific protocols will be highly regarded.

While not essential, candidates with experience using Avid Pro Tools or equivalent software will be highly regarded. Additionally, knowledge of Indigenous broadcasting and a detailed knowledge of modern broadcasting will be advantageous. 

Please note: Candidates need to have a current driver's licence and the flexibility to travel throughout the region as required.
