About the Organisation

Roper Gulf Regional Council provides a range of services over an area that spans 185,000 sq km (80% the size of Victoria) that covers the region east and southeast of Katherine, Northern Territory. The total estimated resident population of the region is 6,919.

Roper Gulf Regional Council incorporates eleven main communities and delivers services such as: Council Administration; Waste Management; Municipal Services; Sport & Recreation; Aged Care; Child Care; Youth Services and Juvenile Diversion; Libraries; RJCP Programs; Power, Water and Sewerage Maintenance; Repairs and Maintenance and Tenancy Management; Night Patrol, Civil Works, and many more.

About the Katherine Region

About the Opportunity

Roper Gulf Regional Council (RGRC) have an excellent opportunity available for a full-time Human Resource Manager to join their Corporate Services team, based in Katherine, NT on a full time basis.

Reporting to the Director Corporate Governance, you will be responsible for providing strategic human resources support to the Executive Management team and Council. You will identify, develop and implement a range of specialised HR and Customer Service projects and systems to support the strategic business directions and business activities of the Council. 

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing and maintaining professional human resource systems throughout Council;
  • Providing leadership and advice to the Executive Management Team on all human resource functions and industrial relations matters;
  • Developing and implementing human resource policies as outlined in the Local Government Act and as required by Council;
  • Improving access to human resources and training opportunities and undertake research and projects aimed at improving professional development outcomes for staff across the Roper Gulf Regional Council; and
  • Providing high quality customer service, including customer complaints coordination.

RGRC are seeking a tertiary qualified Human Resources Manager with demonstrated managerial experience in a human resources or industrial relations role. You will have proven skills in the case management of employees, including performance management, recruitment, workplace health and safety, and workers compensation. A strong understanding of contemporary HR issues and practices will be vital to your success. 

Effective communication skills coupled with a positive and encouraging interpersonal style will ensure you fit into this welcoming team with ease. You’ll be confident in managing tasks with competing priorities to meet tight deadlines, with a drive to work constructively within a small, close-knit team environment.

Importantly, you’ll have an understanding and genuine interest in Indigenous culture, with the ability to liaise with Indigenous community members in a culturally sensitive manner. 

A current 'C' class manual driver's licence for Northern Territory is essential to be considered for either position. Successful candidates will be required to undertake a criminal history check and update each year as required. Upon commencement you will need to hold a current OCHRE card or provide an application receipt for an exemption to be approved by SAFE NT.

Prior to employment with Roper Gulf Regional Council you must:

  • Hold a current Northern Territory 'C' class manual driver's licence;

  • At commencement of employment hold a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (OCHRE Card) or provide an application receipt for an exemption to be approved by SAFE NT prior to commencing; and
  • Be an Australian Resident or provide the current, relevant Visa to work within Australia.
