About Mallee CMA

The Mallee Catchment Management Authority (Mallee CMA) was established in 1997 by the Victorian Government under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 and is the largest catchment area in Victoria, running along the Murray River from Nyah to the South Australian border, and south to the vast dryland cereal and wheat crops of the Wimmera.

The primary responsibility of Mallee CMA is to ensure that natural resources in the region are managed in an integrated and ecologically sustainable way. The organisation has project responsibilities that include the management of:

  • Waterways;
  • Biodiversity (including vegetation restoration and threatened species recovery);
  • Floodplains;
  • Salinity; and

Due to an exciting growth period and additional government funding, Mallee CMA now has a newly created position for a driven Team Leader - Environmental Water, based in Irymple, VIC. This role is being offered on a full-time, fixed term, 2-year contract with renewal subject to funding.

Reporting to the Manager, Waterways, this position is primarily responsible for supporting the effective and efficient management of the Mallee CMA's environmental water programs, functions and services, including management of the Environmental Water Reserve and delivery of Basin Plan commitments. 

Managing a dynamic team focused on environmental water planning, community engagement and delivery, the Team Leader will also be responsible for analysing information, developing reports and providing regional-level support for Basin Plan implementation in relation to environmental watering.

Some of your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the development and/or review of strategies and policy applicable to environmental water;
  • Developing, managing and implementing the environmental watering program throughout the Mallee region;
  • Coordinating development and review of environmental water plans including annual watering plans, operational plans, environmental water management plans, delivery plans and dry inflow contingency plans;
  • Ensuring appropriate financial, project management and reporting of the environmental watering team; and
  • Build, manage and maintain successful partnerships with all stakeholders and investors and coordinate stakeholder operational committees.

To be successful in this position you will hold tertiary qualifications in project, contract, or natural resources management, or a related discipline and have previous experience in managing and delivering complex environmental water programs, in line with recognised project management methods.

With a number of direct reports, you will be a collaborative and supportive leader with previous leadership experience and the ability to manage a dynamic team in a complex and changing environment. In addition, you will have demonstrated experience in sourcing, analysing and interpreting anecdotal and scientific information and providing advice on the results of these investigations, as required. 

Mallee CMA is looking for candidates with superior verbal and written communication and negotiation skills, who can quickly establish rapport with service delivery partners, key government agencies and community groups and take a tactful and diplomatic approach in navigating the political landscape to obtain necessary funding, as required.

This role will be well suited to an innovative, strategic thinker, with strong commercial acumen, who can provide technical guidance whilst still driving 'big-picture' growth and planning.
