About the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre

Situated on the banks of the Yukon River, the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre is one of the largest facilities in Whitehorse and an important piece of the social fabric of the Yukon community. Officially opened in 2012, the Centre celebrates the rich heritage and contemporary way of life of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation people and is a gathering place for people of all cultures. 

The Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre welcome visitors from near and far to gather in KDFN's cultural home. In 2016, the Centre was proud to host the Duke and Dutchess of Cambridge on their royal tour and it regularly hosts and curates exhibits, conferences, galas, weddings and cultural festivals, including National Aboriginal Day and the Adäka Cultural Festival.The 45,000 sq. ft. facility leases 17,000 sq. ft. to the Whitehorse public library through a long-term lease, has 11,000 sq. ft. of conference space, which features a Longhouse that can hold up to 500 guests, multiple classrooms, artist studio, elders lounge, fire pit, full-service kitchen and public library.

The vision of the Centre is to revive, demonstrate and preserve the local language, practices, values, and traditional way of life for the benefit of the people, as well as share stories, art, music and traditional food with visitors from around the world.

About the Opportunity

Kwanlin Dün Cultural Centre is currently seeking an Executive Director to take on a pivotal leadership role in Whitehorse, Yukon. This is a full-time role offered on a three-year term, with the possibility for extension. 

This role calls for an experienced leader with excellent communication skills, a strong business acumen, and cultural sensitivity. Reporting to the Chair of the Kwanlin Dün Cultural Society’s Governance Council, the Executive Director is responsible for leading, directing and managing the day-to-day operations and administration of the Centre. This includes overseeing the strategic planning and financial management for the Centre, as well as supervising personnel (Operations Manager, Marketing & Events Manager, Finance & Administration Officer, and Heritage and Cultural Program Coordinators), performance management, program development, business development, fundraising, and media relations. 

Key accountabilities include: 

  • Develop, implement and manage strategic and marketing plans, annual work plans and business models that guide the development and implementation of the Centre’s operations and policies 
  • Develop annual, departmental and program budgets and ensure the effective administration of the Centre’s funds in accordance with the approved budget, and monitor the Centre’s cash flow on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis
  • Develop and implement effective financial accounting and reporting systems to ensure the financial health of the Centre
  • Develop and maintain effective and strategic relationships with individuals and groups involved in the planning, development, implementation, maintenance and operations of the Centre
  • Provide effective leadership and direction for Centre staff and fostering a positive, healthy and safe work environment, while establishing goals, performance objectives, and evaluating employee performance on an annual basis
  • Ensure the Centre operates in accordance with governing legislation and regulations and developing and implementing internal policies and procedures that are in compliance and reflect best practices
  • Oversee the Centre's programming, including the planning and management of collections and presentations, standing exhibits, interpretation the First Nation’s history, and public programs including workshops, elders’ programs, the resident artists’ program, and provisioning of interpretive services
  • Work with the Governance Council and the Chief and Council to identify community and programming needs, write proposals and grant applications, research and pursue funding opportunities, and identify new business initiatives and partnerships 
  • Develop and manage contracts and oversee agreements to ensure that program and regulatory reporting and licensing requirements are met
  • Develop and implement public communication and marketing strategies, and act as the spokesperson for the organization 

The Ideal Candidate 

The successful candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in arts administration and/or business management, or an equivalent combination of experience in a non-profit, public or private arts or heritage resource management related field, or in public/business administration

Previous experience with capital and operating budget development and management is essential, as is proven ability to manage the financial performance of a department or program. The Executive Director will be expected to oversee expenditures, identify variances, set targets and manage goals.

Similarly, previous experience in a senior administration, human resource management or not-for-profit leadership role is ideal, as is knowledge of First Nation governments and understanding of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation culture and heritage

This role is well suited to a superior communicator with strong facilitation skills and a demonstrated ability to foster a working environment based on trust, respect and teamwork. Diplomatic and tactful, the Executive Director will lead by example and focus on achieving results through the encouragement and support of others. 

Finally, proficiency with common computer application (word processing, spreadsheet, email and web browsers) is required, as is the ability to travel (within Whitehorse), when required.
