About the Organisation

Founded in 1951, Community Restorative Centre (CRC) is an independent community organisation with a broad funding base, dedicated to supporting people affected by the criminal justice system, particularly prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families and friends. 

The Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Transition Program aims to overcome barriers to accessing alcohol and other drug services for people exiting prison.  This position will work specifically with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, particularly those with an intellectual disability or cognitive impairment; with a mental illness; and/or women who have dependent children. 

About the Opportunity

Community Restorative Centre (CRC) now has a fantastic opportunity for a full-time Drug & Alcohol Transition Worker to join their Transitional Drug and Alcohol Project team in Broadway, NSW. This is a contract position until 30th June, 2018, with ongoing employment subject to funding. This is an identified position. CRC considers being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification as specified under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). 

The Transitional Drug and Alcohol Worker will provide outreach drug and alcohol support and counselling to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people leaving NSW Correctional Centres.  The project will focus on the provision of AOD counselling, health promotion, support and referral to individuals for whom access to mainstream services remains difficult and /or inaccessible. Casework services are delivered on an outreach basis.  Position is generally Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm; with occasional out-of-hours’ work to be performed as required.

More specifically, your primary functions will include:

  • Assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people exiting prison to address problematic drug and alcohol use and provide continuity of support for those who have participated in drug and alcohol programs while in custody;
  • Interventions aimed at reducing offending behaviour and recidivism that is directly connected to problematic drug and alcohol use;
  • Working with clients with a range of offending histories, including violent offences, sex offences and offences against children; and
  • Building the capacity of mainstream drug and alcohol services to work with criminal justice system clients.

The successful applicants will possess relevant qualifications (for example a Certificate IV in AOD or Community Services or a degree in Counselling, Welfare, Social Work or Social Sciences), however those with significant work experience in the provision of drug and alcohol counselling/treatment to people with complex needs will also be considered in lieu of formal qualifications.

In this role, you will require demonstrated experience in the development of individually tailored drug and alcohol support, and the delivery of outreach services, in adapting and delivering services to meet the needs of people with cognitive impairment, and in providing holistic support to individuals is essential. Your knowledge of the principles of harm minimisation and health promotion, and of issues facing both people involved in the criminal justice system and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will be pivotal to your success. Additionally, you'll require experience in delivering culturally appropriate services and in delivering information sessions/training to government and/or non-government organisations.

Community Restorative Centre is seeking motivated individuals with strong networking skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. A current driver's licence and NSW Working with Chidren check are required in this role. Although not essential, knowledge of current Child Protection legislation and an understanding of the workings of Corrective Services NSW will be highly regarded.
