First incorporated in 1971, Nunkuwarrin Yunti has grown from a welfare agency with three employees to a multi-faceted organisation with over 100 staff who deliver a diverse range of health care and community support services.

About the Opportunity

Nunkuwarrin Yunti has significantly expanded Maternal and Child Health services through the New Directions: Mothers and Babies program, funded by the Australian Government. As a Community Midwife funded under this Program, you will be passionate about providing holistic care, support and education to women and their families pre-conceptually, during pregnancy and the early postnatal period. Ideally you will also have experience in the delivery of Women’s Health services. 

Working in partnership with our Aboriginal Health Practitioner and closely with the MCH team, and other Primary Care Services’ staff, including General Practitioners and Specialist and Allied Health providers, you will provide high quality midwifery services.  

As an integral member of a multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively to ensure a high level of health care, support and education is provided to the local and wider Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander community.

Working under the general direction of the Maternal and Child Health Coordinator, your duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Providing midwifery care to individual clients, case management and group work, in one of our primary care services clinics or as outreach, including home visits;
  • Providing support to clients and families, through assessment and appropriate referrals to internal and external service providers;
  • Providing support, guidance and education opportunities for other staff in the team, in particular Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Health Workers;
  • Developing and implementing culturally appropriate antenatal groups (in partnership with Aboriginal Health Practitioners and Health Workers);
  • Developing and maintaining effective internal and external networks; and
  • Contributing to quality management systems and continuous improvement processes.

The ideal candidate will be an AHPRA Registered Midwife with at least three years’ as a Midwife, and preference will be given to those with community midwifery experience and / or experience working in Indigenous health.

Nunkuwarrin Yunti are seeking a candidate who is culturally sensitive and has a strong understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, with the ability to effectively communicate with Indigenous clients.
