About the Organization

Nisga'a Lisims Government (NLG) building opened its doors in 2000, and has since been responsible for a vital set of functions carried out under various departments including Finance, Programs & Services, Fisheries & Wildlife, and Lands & Resources, all which contribute to the development of Nisga'a Lands. NLG's directives are governed under Nisga’a laws as well as federal and provincial laws.

Gitlaxt'aamiks, also known as New Aiyansh, is a Nisga'a village in the heart of the Nass Valley in British Columbia, Canada. As one of four Nisga'a villages, it is considered the "capital of the Nisga'a Nation."

Located on BC's rugged northwest coast, and just 97km north of Terrace, Nisga'a Lands are blessed with soaring mountains, dramatic lava beds, picturesque fjords, and thriving rivers and streams. The Kitimat-Terrace Regional Airport is the largest in the area with several direct daily flights to Vancouver, as well as flights to a host of other Northwestern communities. Terrace is served by daily, direct flights from Vancouver by Air Canada Jazz, and Central Mountain Air & Westjet. Flying time is under 2 hours from Vancouver.

About the Opportunity

NLG has an exciting opportunity for a Financial Controller to join the group in Gitlaxt'aamiks (also known as New Aiyansh) or Terrace in beautiful British Columbia. You will be able to choose where you will reside based on your preference, but you will be required to complete the first 6 months of your employment (at a minimum) working within the community and with the Accounting team in Gitlaxt'aamiks. 

Working within the NLG Finance Legislation, and in accordance with Canada Public Sector Accounting Standards, you will administer and maintain the accounting systems of the NLG. Please note that you will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer.

Responsible for full-cycle accounting functions, you will supervise the accounting group, as well as provide accurate and timely financial and management reports.

Capable of interpreting financial information, you will help to facilitate effective decision-making and assist in the preparation and presentation of the operation and capital budgetsIn addition, you will oversee the development and maintenance of accounting procedures and internal controls. 

To qualify for this role, the successful candidate will have: 

  • A Degree in Finance or Accounting 
  • A professional Accounting Designation (preferably a CPA)
  • A minimum of 5 years accounting experience, with at least 1 year in a supervisory role

The perfect candidate will have high-level experience gained from the First Nations or Government/Municipal sector; however, an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered if you have expert knowledge of the principles and practices of fund accounting, finance, and business administration.

You must also be adept at interpreting applicable federal, provincial and local laws and regulations. Similarly, you will also be knowledgeable regarding the development, preparation, and control of budgets. 

Skilled at analyzing problems, projecting consequences, identifying solutions and implementing recommendations, you will be capable of making sound decisions based on independent judgement. You will also be skilled at preparing, reviewing and analyzing operational and financial reports. 

This role is well suited to someone who can establish and maintain professional working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds, as well as with co-workers at all levels. Friendly and approachable, it is important that you also maintain tact and confidentiality at all time. 

Critical to your success in this role is your ability to successfully manage a team, work independently, and meet strict deadlines. This will include overseeing the staffing, training, and performance evaluation functions. As such, strong team-building skills and excellent oral and written communication skills will be the key to your success in this role. 

Proficient with financial accounting programs and the MS Office Suite, you will demonstrate excellence and continually seek improvement in everything that you do.
