About the Opportunity 

Methanex currently has an exciting career opportunity for a Lead Inspector (NOC 2261) to join our team in Medicine Hat on a full-time basis (40 hours per week, based on a Compressed Work Week schedule consisting of 80 hours spread across nine working days in the course of two weeks, resulting in a day off every second Friday). 

Reporting to the Manager, Maintenance, you will develop, maintain and execute a cost-effective static pressure equipment inspection and condition assessment program that assures compliance with all statutory requirements, and ensures that plant availability and reliability targets are achieved. This position has been identified as a strategic opportunity with potential links to future succession plans.

Key accountabilities include: 

  • Leading pressure equipment inspection and management for the site
  • Administering the Pressure Equipment Integrity Management System (PEIMP), including training, review meetings, audits, audit actions, and non-conformance reporting elements, to ensure systems are functioning effectively
  • Maintaining complete, current knowledge and documentation of Alberta Boilers Safety Association (ABSA) requirements and further ensuring requirements are applied and met by the site
  • Approving inspection procedures and reports, identifying corrective actions for non-conformance that affect the integrity of pressure equipment, and ensuring corrective actions are carried out
  • Developing and ensuring Inspection Test Plans (ITPs) are in place for repairs, alterations, and projects, and ensuring the inspection of equipment meets regulatory requirements and establishing inspection intervals consistent with code and risk-based inspection (RBI) processes
  • Coordinating and managing non-destructive testing (NDT) and inspection programs, the corrosion monitoring program, the safety relief valve maintenance program and supporting the risk-based inspection program
  • Maintaining current integrity systems including inspection data and records, non-conformance reports and failure logs
  • Conducting post-inspection integrity assessments of pressure equipment, tanks, piping and components, updating inspection intervals accordingly and providing recommendations for corrosion mitigation and production optimization
  • Initiating or participating in management of change (MOC) processes related to the integrity of pressure equipment
  • Reviewing and approving contractor quality control programs, as well as inspection and test plans for Methanex contracts
  • Managing the optimization of resources for the inspection team, competency requirements for the inspection team and inspection contractors, as well as selection and ongoing oversight of selected contract resources
  • Guiding and mentoring internal and contract equipment inspectors and quality control inspectors
  • Developing turnaround inspection plans and execution strategies, and supporting global inspection needs related to turnarounds

Our successful candidate will possess:

  • Five years of related inspection experience in a chemical, energy or other similar industrial setting
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in engineering or engineering technology, or journeyperson certification in a relevant trade
  • American Petroleum Institute Pressure Vessel Inspection Certification, specifically API 510 and 570
  • Knowledge of failure mechanisms experienced in the chemical industry, and experience using failure analysis to identify and predict equipment deterioration
  • Demonstrated leadership ability

A combination of related education, skills and experience may be considered. The language of work will be English. 

It is further preferred that the optimal candidate will possess:

  • Alberta In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspection certification and National Board In-Service Inspection Certification, or the willingness to obtain these certifications
  • Strong knowledge of CSA, API, CGSB and ASME construction codes, standards and specifications related to the fabrication and repair of pressure equipment, and non-destructive evaluation practices
  • Knowledge of inspection and testing methods
  • Experience in assessing and repairing hydrogen reformer furnaces is a significant asset
