About Warrumbungle Shire Council

With a population of nearly 10,000 and a land area of more than 12,000 sq kms, Warrumbungle Shire Council features the townships of Coonabarabran, Coolah, Dunedoo Binnaway, Baradine and Mendooran.  Their mission is to provide quality, cost effective services, infrastructure and leadership and governance through a set of ten core values - Honesty, Integrity, Fairness, Compassion, Respect, Transparency, Passion, Trust and Opportunity.

Warrumbungle Shire is strategically positioned on the Newell Highway mid-way between Brisbane and Melbourne, 5 hours north-west of Sydney. A number of highways and main roads traverse the shire providing links with surrounding regional centres.  The landscape ranges from extensive plains to undulating hills, from the high basaltic plateau of the Coolah Tops in the east to the mountainous peaks of extinct volcanoes in the Warrumbungle National Park, west of Coonabarabran.

The stunning night skies, formed by a combination of low pollution, very low humidity and limited cloud cover have drawn astronomers and researchers to Coonabarabran in their search for what lies beyond the confines of the visual night sky.
