About the Opportunities

Due to continued growth, Aplin Martin has an exciting opportunity for a Planner and a Senior Planner to join our team in Surrey, British Columbia on a full-time basis.

As a Planner, you will execute professional planning work of moderate difficulty, and will possess in-depth knowledge within one or more planning specialties such as economic development, master planning, development planning, urban design, or environmental planning. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Interpreting and applying applicable local bylaws, ordinances, and regulations
  • Initiating actions necessary to correct deficiencies or violations of regulations
  • Assisting with updates and maintenance of Comprehensive Plan and land development regulations
  • Conducting review of various development applications including surveys, permits, site plans, variance requests and rezonings
  • Conducting extensive research in specific or general project areas
  • Writing and presenting formal and technical reports, working papers, and correspondence
  • Identifying community problems, issues, and opportunities in particular neighborhoods that could be mitigated through better community planning
  • Developing long-range plans for communities with common developmental issues
  • Developing strategies to promote economic and community development or efficient land use consistent with community goals
  • Evaluating adequacy of community facilities in meeting current and projected needs
  • Recommending priorities, schedules, and funding sources to implement public improvements plan
  • Writing, or assisting in writing, a variety of ordinances and regulations relating to development controls
  • Preparing and/or attending substantial number of evening and/or weekend meetings for Committee/Council meetings, public meetings and client meetings

The Senior Planner will carry out similar functions to the Planner, but will also be involved with (or even lead) larger, more complex planning assignments. In this role, you may supervise the Planning Technician, Project Planner or Intermediate Planner.

In addition to the above, responsibilities include: 

  • Performing advanced professional work related to a variety of planning assignments
  • Preparing planning documents such as official plans, growth studies and/or zoning by-laws
  • Managing complex planning studies, development applications, and review proposals
  • Reviewing and process official plan amendments, rezoning, plans of subdivision and site plans
  • Acting as liaison between clients and approving authorities
  • Developing project budgets, lead projects and verify contract expenditures
  • Liaising with stakeholders to ensure completed work meets client expectations, jurisdiction standards, and business unit standards;
  • Creating and sustaining a strong network in the business community
  • Identifying potential markets and trends
  • Understanding and provide solutions
  • Participating in the preparation of proposals and other related business development activities
  • Ensuring smooth workflow by fairly delegating work to resource staff
  • Liaising with team to ensure completed work meets or exceeds client expectation and company standards
  • Actively participating in a team environment that promotes sharing knowledge and learning from other
  • Participating in after hour Committee/Council meetings, public meetings, and client meetings

The Successful Candidates

In order to qualify for the Planner role, you will have a Bachelors degree and a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience. A master's degree in Urban Planning or Economics is preferred. MCIP Certification or ability to obtain certification within a reasonable period of time is required, as is PIBC Membership, or eligibility for membership.

In order to qualify for the Senior Planner role, you will have a Master’s degree in Planning or related field and a minimum of 7 years of progressive planning experience, preferably in a consulting environment or in a project management role. A master's degree in Urban Planning or Economics is preferred. You must also be a member of the Canadian Institute of Planners, and have MCIP Certification or the ability to obtain certification within a reasonable period of time.

In order to succeed in either of these roles, you will have strong time management and communication skills, as well as high attention to detail and the ability to consistently produce accurate and high-quality work. You will also have the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary environment, but also work independently, and to work concurrently on several different projects.
