Established in the early 1970’s, Pika Wiya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (Pika Wiya) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled service, providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services, social support and training to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within Port Augusta and surrounding communities. 

The organisation aims to support safe nurturing environments for Aboriginal women, infants and children with the overall goal to provide positive care experiences and encourage continued engagement with services for better health outcomes.  

About the Opportunity

Pika Wiya Aboriginal Health Service Aboriginal Corporation now has two (2), full-time opportunities for experienced Midwives and/or Registered Nurses to join their team in Port Augusta, SA.

Reporting to the Deputy CEO, in this role, you will be primarily responsible for facilitating the provision of coordinated, safe and effective antenatal and postnatal care, health counselling and primary health care to Aboriginal women and their families, in partnership with Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners, doctor’s and maternal services.

More specifically, your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Coordinating and participating in home visits;
  • Assisting women with family planning education and contraceptive options;
  • Developing and maintaining suitable, evidence-based, health promotion and information resources for pregnant Aboriginal women and their families;
  • Providing support to Aboriginal clients and their families through assessment and appropriate referrals to internal and external service providers; and
  • Developing and implementing culturally appropriate groups for young women. 

To be successful in this role, you must hold current AHPRA registration as a Midwife or Nurse with at least 3 years post-graduate experience. Any experience in the delivery of antenatal and postnatal care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, including a demonstrated understanding of culturally sensitive practice, will be highly regarded.

A current First Aid Certificate and Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS) are also a must.
