Urapuntja Health Service provides services to a population of about 1000 permanent residents who live in 16 homeland communities. A unique health service, Urapuntja delivers an outreach service to all 16 outstation communities every week and the primary clinic is not in the middle of the community.

Your new career

Urapuntja now have a unique opportunity for a full-time Remote Area Nurse / Midwife, to join their dedicated team in Utopia, NT. 

This is not a clinic-based role! You will be travelling by 4WD vehicle to provide clinical services to remote outstations on a daily basis. 

Reporting to the Clinic Manager and working within a multidisciplinary team, this role will see you responsible for providing general health care through the assessment and management of a broad range of clinical problems to community members, with a component of midwifery for the small number of patients requiring ante and post natal care

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Developing and delivering health programs with an emphasis on chronic disease, women’s health and STIs;
  • Participating in opportunistic and community screening activities;
  • Performing consultations with community health program clients;
  • Dispensing and administering pharmaceutical therapies, including vaccines and prescribed pharmaceuticals for common conditions;
  • Coordinating the evacuation of patients transferring to Alice Springs Hospital, including liaising with DMO and RFDS, providing emergency care until evacuation, transporting patient to airstrip and handing over patient care; and
  • Providing general health promotion and education.

About You

Highly resourceful and adaptable candidates will thrive in this position, as no two days are the same when working in remote outstations. You'll be a patient, collaborative individual able to fit within any group dynamic and handle any unexpected challenges that may come your way.

Importantly, your exceptional communication and interpersonal skills will provide you with the means to effectively liaise with Aboriginal clients in a culturally appropriate manner. A prior understanding of Aboriginal primary health care and the health issues that impact Aboriginal communities would be beneficial, however is not essential, providing you are open to taking cultural advice from Aboriginal staff, with the desire to build upon your understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal culture.

To be considered you will:

  • Be a Registered Nurse with Midwifery qualifications and be registered (or eligible for registration) with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA);
  • Have demonstrated clinical and health promotion skills and knowledge in the areas of STIs, Women's Health and Ante / Post Natal Care;
  • Currently hold, or be eligible to obtain an OCHRE card (Working with Children Clearance) and NT About Giving Vaccines Certification prior to commencing employment. 

This role is 9am – 5pm, giving you back your weekends to rest, relax or explore! There will be some requirement to participate in after-hours on-call and the emergency care roster. 

Please note: A current, manual driver’s licence, with the ability to travel on unsealed roads via 4WD is a requirement of this role, and you must be comfortable with this.
