About the Opportunity

Methanex is currently seeking a qualified Operations Shift Supervisor to join the team in Medicine Hat, Alberta.

Reporting to the Operations Superintendent, you will provide leadership, training and technical troubleshooting guidance to a crew of up to nine operators to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the site’s industrial methanol manufacturing plant. You will monitor plant operations and plant equipment, drawing on your comprehensive knowledge of operator duties and responsibilities in all areas of the plant, to facilitate the achievement of optimal production within safe operating limits.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Lead and supervise a crew of up to nine operators in the safe and efficient operation of the plant
  • Oversee the operation of all plant equipment and related devices, including but not limited to, a high-pressure package boiler; hydrogen reformer; high-pressure waste heat boiler; high-pressure steam turbines; high-pressure compressors; high-pressure pumps and vessels; distributed control system (DCS); cation, anion, and mix-bed water treatment plant; fire water system; cooling towers; N2 generation; diesel and natural gas electrical emergency generators; and, ammonia and related refrigeration system
  • Ensure operators make appropriate adjustments to plant equipment to foster the achievement of production, reliability and quality targets
  • Ensure effective communication with other departments, particularly with respect to safe isolation and lockout of equipment for inspection and repair
  • Lead safety meetings, review plant procedures with crew members on a regular basis and maintain and review logs of all process, maintenance, water treatment and safety activities
  • Facilitate appropriate administration of the Work Safety Control Systems (WSCS), ensure team members carry out their duties as issuing authorities and area authorities, and review and approve all high-risk work including the completion of required operations risk assessments, rescue plans, and contingency plans
  • Ensure incidents, when they occur, are reported and investigated in a timely manner, and corrective actions are implemented
  • Ensure operating compliance with all regulatory and environmental limits
  • Manage crew scheduling to meet department and employee needs and human resource requirements
  • Provide instruction and support for crew members in plant operation and in their progression as operators; ensure operators complete appropriate training on an annual basis
  • Foster the development of crew members through the provision of coaching and mentoring, and by facilitating performance management activities including the development of performance goals, career plans, and the completion of performance appraisals
  • Actively lead the response to emergency situations during regular and non-regular working hours

To qualify, you will have a have a Second Class Power Engineering Certification. A post-secondary Diploma in Power Engineering Technology is also preferred.

The successful candidate will have 10 years of operations experience within a petrochemical or other industrial plant setting, complimented with five years of supervisory and people management experience, including coaching and mentoring team members, completing performance appraisals, and supporting training, development and career planning activities. 

Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude is essential for success in this role, as is demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office programs and internet-based applications. 

This role is well suited to a strong troubleshooter with excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. With a strong focus on safety and efficiency, you will be adept to working a 12-hour, rotating, day/night schedule. 

You will do well in this role if you have excellent written and verbal communication and listening skills. You will demonstrate strong collaboration skills, cultural sensitivity, diplomacy and tact, and have a demonstrated ability to build and maintain constructive and effective relationships

Comfortable with ambiguity, including the ability to effectively respond to shifting priorities, you will also exercise sound judgment and make valuable decisions based on a mixture of analysis, wisdom, and experience.  You consistently demonstrate the ability to make quick decisions in critical situations with positive results.  Finally, you must be extremely organized and detail-oriented. With strong prioritization and time management skills, you will have a demonstrated ability to manage complex issues both independently and within a team environment.
