Roper Gulf Regional Council (RGRC) provides a range of services over an area that spans 185,000 sq km (80% the size of Victoria) that covers the region east and southeast of Katherine, Northern Territory. The total estimated resident population of the region is 6,919.

About the Opportunity

Roper Gulf Regional Council (RGRC) has a unique opportunity for a Financial Accountant to join its established Corporate Governance team based in Katherine, NT. This position is being offered on a full-time basis. 

Working with the Finance team, and reporting directly to the Finance Manager, your main area of responsibility will be to provide financial services, including the coordination and preparation of the annual financial statements, maintenance and development of financial reporting, budgets, budgetary control systems and the preparation of financial reports for various financial services clients.

In addition you will oversee all aspects relating to indirect tax within RGRC.

More specifically, your areas of responsibility will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Maintaining financial procedures consistent with the RGRC and local Government directives;
  • Contributing to the development and implementation of accounting and financial management policies, processes and procedures that comply with government policies and procedures, and legislative requirements;
  • Providing financial advice and draft policies relating to taxation updates and issues that affect the Council;
  • Responding to taxation queries from management, staff and other external stakeholders;
  • Assisting with writing and maintaining account policy and procedures to ensure consistency with Australian accounting standards; and
  • Carrying out duties in accordance with RGRC's, Work Health & Safety policy, safety principles, corporate values and strategies.

Roper Gulf Regional Council are seeking a candidate with demonstrated experience in financial accounting. This includes bank reconciliation, general ledger reporting and grant acquittals, as well as experience in the preparation and coordination of audited annual financial statements.

You will have an understanding of government accounting, relating to the functions of external reporting. This will be supported by a sound knowledge of accounting standards and government accounting policies, practices, and procedures. 

Suitable candidates will be able to outline their experience in providing complex financial and accounting policy advice to senior management, including analysing and presenting financial data. A comprehensive use of accounting software packages and advanced Excel skills will be required. Experience in the use of Technology One/ Finance One would be advantageous.

Furthermore, your excellent communication skills, high level of attention to detail and commitment to providing a high standard of client service, will be pivotal to your success.

While not essential, individuals with tertiary qualifications in accounting, commerce, economics or business majoring in accounting, or working towards, will be highly regarded. As will candidates with membership to the Institute of Chartered Accountants or CPA Australia.

Please note: Some out of hours work, including occasional travel to remote communities requiring overnight stays will be required.

Prior to employment with Roper Gulf Regional Council you must:

  • Hold a current Northern Territory 'C' class manual driver's licence;
  • Undertake a new criminal history check at commencement of employment with RGRC;
  • At commencement of employment hold a current Working with Children Clearance Notice (OCHRE Card) or provide an application receipt for an exemption to be approved by SAFE NT prior to commencing; and
  • Be an Australian Resident or provide the current, relevant Visa to work within Australia.
