Nenan Dane ẕaa Deh Zona Family Services Society (Nenan) is a group of dedicated professionals, focused on strengthening families and helping people to navigate the current system by recognizing the important and significant traditional and cultural foundations unique to the diverse peoples of Treaty 8. Services are based on the needs and goals of Indigenous individuals and communities in Northeastern BC and are linked directly to the distinct culture, traditional practices and language of each family.

About the Opportunity

Currently, Nenan is seeking multiple Family Navigators in Fort St John, BC. 

In this key role, you will report directly to the Executive Director and be responsible for supporting families involved in the child welfare system, or ideally, assisting families in an early intervention and prevention support services capacity by applying a cultural and indigenous focus to traditional practices.

In this full time, permanent role, your main duties, and responsibilities will include:

  • Connecting and collaborating with appropriate referral sources
  • Carrying out intake and assessment of clients
  • Developing, from a client-centred approach, and carrying out appropriate wellness/family service plans
  • Working collaboratively with professionals and identified support systems involved with clients
  • Maintaining accurate case files and case management plans
  • Coordinating and facilitating health and wellness community workshops

In order to qualify, you will have a Bachelors Degree in Social Work, Child & Youth Care, and/or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience. New graduates are encouraged to apply. 

Our ideal candidate will also demonstrate:

  • Previous experience working with Indigenous communities and/or non-profit organizations
  • Demonstrated understanding of Treaty 8 Indigenous people of Northeastern BC                   
  • A strong understanding of the Child, Family & Community Services Act, alternative dispute resolution process, court process and associated policies (mandatory)
  • An awareness of Indigenous cultures and issues affecting Indigenous families and communities
  • An awareness of the dynamics of active and ongoing addiction, sexual abuse, family violence (including child abuse and neglect), grief, suicide, depression, healing, and recovery
  • Familiarity with program planning, development, and evaluation
  • An awareness of the value of harm reduction practices and knowledge of ethics and boundaries
  • Demonstrated skills in report writing and documentation and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated success in interventions, crises, and outcomes
  • A commitment to their own self-care 

In support of your qualifications, it is crucial that you are able to work independently, but also work as part of a collaborative and integrated community team. You will have excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral (in English).  You will also be highly adaptable and have the ability to work well under pressure. Similarly, your strong time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills will serve you well in this role.                 

Please note that due to the nature of this role, some travel to Fort Nelson is required. As such, you must be comfortable driving in winter conditions, and a valid BC Class 5 driver's license and criminal record check are required. Some evening and weekend work may also be required.

It is also important to know that this role may involve exposure to highly sensitive issues such as cases of child abuse, sexual abuse, and/or neglect. As such, you will need to be prepared to deal with these issues on the job.
