About the Organisation

The Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum in western Queensland is an exciting, high profile natural history museum project at the forefront of Australia’s most significant dinosaur discoveries. The Museum is a not-for-profit science and education-focused attraction located in a beautiful wilderness setting near Winton (named The Jump-Up) and actively encourages visitors to become involved in its work.  It houses the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils in the world and operates the most productive fossil preparation laboratory in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Museum consists of three development areas on The Jump-Up: Stage 1 - a Laboratory with a visitor waiting room and display area opened in 2009, Stage 2 - a Reception Centre with exhibition space (the Collection Room), shop and café opened in April 2012 and Phase 1 of Stage 3 - Dinosaur Canyon which opened in April 2017. Phase 2 and Phase 3 of Stage 3 will follow on over the next six years. These final phases will culminate in the construction of the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum of Natural History, a multi-million dollar project designed to become Australia’s premier natural history museum. The Museum is already well on its way to achieving this with Australian Age of Dinosaurs taking out the GOLD AWARD for Queensland’s Best Major Tourist Attraction in November 2016.

About life in Winton

Winton is a town in Central West Queensland, Australia, 177 kilometres north-west of Longreach. The main industries of the area have traditionally involved sheep and cattle raising and more recently tourism.  With a rich history as the birthplace of Waltzing Matilda and QANTAS and links to the Great Shearers' Strike of 1891, Winton is just as well known today for something far more ancient...Dinosaurs!

Situated on the Great Artesian Basin, the water supply bursts to the surface at 83C degrees and is then channelled through cooling ponds before being distributed to the town.  The region is also home to diverse natural history and spectacular landscapes: rolling Mitchell Grass Downs suddenly interrupted by mesa formations, starkly beautiful red earth and spinifex country, and Channel Country with undulating plains as far as the eye can see.

As a community, Winton includes all of the modern amenities one would expect including public and private school options, retail shops, and a number of different sporting facilities including a golf course and swimming pool as well as tennis, squash, cricket and football facilities.
