Founded in 1951, Community Restorative Centre (CRC) is an independent community organisation with a broad funding base, dedicated to supporting people affected by the criminal justice system, particularly prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their families and friends. CRC is the lead provider of specialist throughcare, post-release, and reintegration programs for people transitioning from prison into the community in NSW. All CRC programs aim to reduce crime and break entrenched cycles of disadvantage, offending and imprisonment.

About the Opportunity

Community Restorative Centre (CRC) now has an opportunity for a full-time AOD Transition Worker (Aboriginal Identified) to join their team in Chippendale, NSW. This Monday - Friday position is being offered on a contract basis until June 2018, with possibility of extension subject to funding.

This role will provide outreach drug and alcohol counselling and support to people leaving NSW Correctional Centres, working specifically with Aboriginal inmates leaving custody.

More specifically, your primary functions will include:

  • Assisting people exiting prison to address problematic drug and alcohol use and provide continuity of support for those who have participated in drug and alcohol programs while in custody;
  • Interventions aimed at reducing offending behaviour and recidivism that is directly connected to problematic drug and alcohol use;
  • Working with clients with a range of offending histories, including violent offences, sex offences and offences against children;
  • Building the capacity of mainstream drug and alcohol services to work with criminal justice system clients;
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders such as Aboriginal specific programs and services within Corrective Services NSW and Aboriginal community organisations; and
  • Engaging with the Aboriginal Community in order to raise the profile of the Transitional AOD Program and provide support to people we have not previously been able to reach.

An extensive package of training and support is available for the successful applicant to assist with obtaining relevant qualifications.

This is an identified position. CRC considers being Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification as specified under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).

About You

The successful applicant will possess significant work experience in the provision of drug and alcohol counselling/treatment to people with complex needs and/or relevant qualifications (such as a Certificate IV in AOD or Community Services, and/or formal training in Counselling, Welfare, Social Work or Social Sciences). Demonstrated knowledge of issues facing people involved in the criminal justice system and the services available to support them is also essential.

In this role, you will require demonstrated experience in the development of individually tailored drug and alcohol support and the delivery of outreach services, in adapting and delivering services to meet the needs of people with cognitive impairment, and in providing holistic support.

Your knowledge of the principles of harm minimisation and health promotion, and of issues facing both people involved in the criminal justice system and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities will be pivotal to your success. Additionally, your ability to deliver culturally appropriate and sensitive services in an empathetic and practical - not punitive - way will be crucial.

Please Note: A current Driver’s License and current Working With Children Check are all required before commencing this position. You must also be willing to travel within Sydney on a daily basis in order to provide outreach support.
