About the Organisation

Sunrise Health Service Aboriginal Corporation's (SHSAC) main purpose is to improve the health and well-being of the people in the region east of Katherine in the Northern Territory, using a holistic approach that includes a high standard of primary health and acute medical care.

The Corporation works in partnership with Northern Territory PHN (NT PHN), who provide support services to health professionals and organisation across the Northern Territory. NT PHN offers support and assistance to eligible nurses and allied health professionals who are relocating the to the NT for the purposes of employment.

SHSAC concentrates on priority targets of positive health outcomes and prolonged life expectancy for the “Sun–Come–Up Mob” or Sunrise Way concept.  We have adopted an improved and revitalised multi – disciplinary collaborative team approach which incorporates community engagement, mechanisms for planned health care, treatment of acute illness, emergency response procedures and prevention and management of chronic disease.

Most importantly, the SHSAC approach involves community people taking part in controlling their own health. Everything from financial management and governance, staff selection and service delivery priorities are directed by the organisation's Aboriginal Board and Community Health Committees. About Katherine

Katherine is located about 320km south of Darwin and is the gateway to the north, south, east and west. It is home to the world famous Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk National Park) where visitors are able to cruise or canoe the river or hike one of the many walking tracks. Edith Falls - also part of the Gorge - is a spring that flows all year round and boasts great swimming, camping and picnic areas, and bush walks.

Katherine also holds several parties a year: the annual Katherine Festival is held in August, the Katherine Country Music Muster is held in May and the Katherine Show draws people from throughout the region each July.

About the Opportunity

Sunrise Health Service has an extremely rewarding opportunity for a Safety and Wellbeing Team Leader/Educator to join their dedicated, multidisciplinary team in Katherine, on a full-time basis. 

Reporting to the Regional AOD and Tobacco Coordinator, you will responsible for assisting all Community Based Workers (CBW's), ensuring they have the skills to perform their roles to best practice standards. Working in collaboration with managers, coordinators and staff, you’ll help to maximise performance in the multidisciplinary primary health care team.  You will be working very closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people, in remote communites serviced by SHSAC.

  • Developing and implementing workforce training and education programs for the Community Safety and Wellbeing Team (primarily AOD and tobacco);
  • Collaborating with the Training and Development Officer (TDO) in liaising with external training providers to support and develop SHSAC trainees;
  • Providing day-to-day supervision and coordination of team member's work schedules and administrative requirements in accordance with SHSAC policy;
  • Contributing to the regular data collection of the organisation and any audits that need to be completed;
  • Contributing to the preparation of written reports for Executive Management, funding bodies and Board as necessary; and
  • Participating in staff development and training as requested by the Regional AOD and Tobacco Coordinator to meet requests and objectives in a timely matter.

To be considered, you will have a demonstrated experience in understanding and adhering to the principles of Aboriginal community control of health services, and an ability to practice in a sensitive and culturally safe manner.

While not essential, candidates with a Certificate IV in Indigenous Mentoring (Mentoring Diverse Groups), Certificate IV in Education Support and/or Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE) or equivalent will be highly regarded.

Sunrise Health Service is seeking a resilient and passionate leader who displays a high level of communication skills and has the ability to work within a multidisciplinary primary health care environment. 

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in the use of various computer software programs including Microsoft Office and Patient Information Recall Systems (PIRS), such as Communicare.

The successful candidate must hold a current Police Check and a Working With Children Check (Ochre Card), or have the ability to obtain.

This role will involve driving and staying overnight in remote communities and, as such, you will need a current, unrestrivted driver's license, ideally with 4WD drive experience, and the willingness to travel on light aircraft. 

Candidates with an understanding of the principles of primary health care in remote locations will be highly regarded.
