About the Organisation

Established in the early 1970’s, Pika Wiya Health Service Aboriginal Corporation (Pika Wiya) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled service, providing culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care services, social support and training to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within Port Augusta and surrounding communities. 

The organisation aims to support safe nurturing environments for Aboriginal women, infants and children with the overall goal to provide positive care experiences and encourage continued engagement with services for better health outcomes.  

About the Opportunity

Pika Wiya Aboriginal Health Service Aboriginal Corporation now has a full-time opportunity for an experienced Immunisation Nurse to join their team in Port Augusta, SA.

Reporting to the CEO, your primary responsibility will be to coordinate a culturally and clinically safe and effective immunisation program for adults and children.

More specifically, your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Assessing patient/client needs and plan, implement, and coordinate appropriate service delivery options;
  • Referring clients to internal and external agencies and services;
  • Assisting with outreach services and providing immunisation services at other clinics as required;
  • Developing/sourcing culturally appropriate immunisation promotion tools and actively pursue community engagement opportunities;
  • Ensuring families have up to date immunisation coverage according to the National Immunisation Program Schedule; 
  • Maintaining accurate client records, action recalls, and complete relevant administration tasks as required; and
  • Providing immediate and accurate documentation of vaccinations given to clients in the client book and the Australian Immunisation register.

To be successful in this role, you must hold current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse or Midwife with at least 3 years post-graduate experience. You will also have demonstrated experience in the delivery of nursing care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As such an understanding of culturally sensitive practice will be highly regarded.

In addition, it is essential that you have exceptional organisational skills including effective record keeping and proper vaccine care. 

A current First Aid Certificate and Basic Life Support Certificate (BLS) are also a must.

Pika Wiya is looking for candidates with a keen interest in Aboriginal health service delivery and the capacity to contribute to an integrated approach to complex client care. Importantly, you will undertake good self-care practices and be resilient in the face of difficult situations.
