About MoneyMob Talkabout

MoneyMob Talkabout is a not for profit organisation delivering financial literacy education and counselling with and for people in remote Indigenous communities, to help them positively manage their money.

The program, based in the APY Lands, provides a one-stop shop for local community members to interact with the broader economy in a safe and supportive environment. Teams also visit other communities in South Australia from Pipalyatjarra to Indulkana providing services on an outreach basis.

About the Opportunity

MoneyMob Talkabout is now seeking a Financial Counsellor to join their team in Alice Springs, NT. This role is being offered on a full-time, contract basis until 30th June, 2018, with the possibility of extension being subject to funding.

The main aim of this position is to prevent financial hardship, assist those who are in financial stress or difficulty, and increase client levels of financial capability and resilience through pro-active education and mentoring to teach appropriate skills.

Your key areas of responsibility will include:

  • Developing and delivering community education and information sessions on a range of financial management topics;
  • Establishing relationships / partnerships with other local services to deliver workshops to mutual client groups;
  • Providing one to one assistance to clients to undertake basic financial tasks or transactions, with an emphasis on teaching them the skills to become self-reliant;
  • Ensuring clients with disabilities or barriers have safe financial management arrangements in place;
  • Collecting initial paperwork required for clients to apply for NILS loans and forwarding to the NILS Officer for follow up;
  • Providing financial counselling services, including advocating/negotiating solutions for clients, assisting with activities relating to superannuation and Centrelink, and referring clients for assistance with other relevant matters; and
  • Carrying out case management responsibilities, including assessment of client financial and social circumstances, development of case plans to assist with client financial goals, and collaborating with / providing referrals to other relevant professionals.

This role will be well suited to adaptable and resilient candidates with a true passion and desire for contributing to the wellbeing of remote communities. Along with a strong commitment to social justice, it's important you understand the balance involved when supporting individuals within the community - your aim will be to provide skills and knowledge needed for these individuals to gain independence in regards to successfully managing their finances.

About You

The successful candidate will have completed, or be currently enrolled in, a Diploma of Financial Counselling and will have experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Community welfare / community services / case management
  • Social work
  • Community development
  • Adult and community education

Demonstrated experience working within cross-cultural environments will be required, as will cultural competence and the ability to work both autonomously as well as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Although a financial counselling position, success in this role will rely heavily on your ability to build relationships and effectively engage with community members. As such, advanced communication skills across all domains will be essential, including written, verbal, active listening and observation skills. A well organised individual with strong time management skills and the ability to juggle competing priorities will thrive in this environment. 

Please Note: This position requires regular travel to the Western APY Lands, so must be comfortable with this. To be eligible for consideration you must hold a current Driver's License, and be able to drive 4WD vehicles independently on remote roads. Employment will also be subject to a National Police Clearance.
