Sir Alexander Mackenzie School (SAMS) is located in Hagensborg, B.C. It is home to approximately 100 students in grades 6-12. It also has an active adult education program. SAMS has a proud history of accomplishments in all areas of academic, athletic, fine arts and applied skills programs since the school was first opened in 1949. About the Opportunity

School District 49 has an opening for a continuing full-time Special Education Teacher. In this role you will be responsible for carrying out a variety of assessment, including classroom observations, administration and support functions for ELL/ESD students. This role will require you to work in both the Sir Alexander Mackenzie School and the Bella Coola Elementary School, which are located a short distance apart. 

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Working collaboratively with others to support the learning of students with a variety of needs
  • Implementing effective research-based teaching strategies and formative assessment techniques
  • Implementing extensive Individual Education Programs (IEP's) (detailing adaptations and modifications) in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students and district resource personnel
  • Supporting students designated with Chronic Health
  • Supporting teachers within their classrooms to create inclusive learning environments
  • Evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with special needs
  • Collaborating with classroom teachers and team-teach when warranted to support the learning of special needs students

The successful candidate will have a post secondary degree in a relevant field, previous experience in a role teaching students with special education needs and be a member or be eligible to become a member of the Teacher Regulation Branch.

To excel in this role you will need to be adaptable, have excellent interpersonal, communication, collaborative and organizational skills combined with a high level of compassion and empathy for students with special needs. Experience and knowledge of the Aboriginal world view will be considered an asset.
