About the Organization

First Nations Technical Services Advisory Group Inc (TSAG) is a not-for-profit First Nations organization created by the Chiefs of Alberta. Their purpose is to assist First Nations in the Treaty 6, 7 & 8 regions in gaining the tools and knowledge they need to achieve and maintain high standards in technology and services within the community.

TSAG’s goal is to empower communities, giving them the confidence and resources to maintain a healthy environment. With technical and advisory services, they offer programs that focus on the community as a whole as well as programs targeted at educating youth.

About the Opportunity 

We're currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join our team as a GIS Technician on a full-time basis.

Based in Edmonton, and reporting to the IT Manager and working with the GIS Project Lead and other GIS Technicians, you will provide data management and mapping for a variety of types of information, including traditional land use, land management, infrastructure and housing data.

Please note, this position will require travel across Western Canada in order to work directly with First Nations to help meet their needs.

In order to qualify for this role, you will have a GIS technical diploma or an undergraduate degree in GIS or a related field with requisite GIS experience and be proficient in creating, editing, documenting and managing spatial data.

Our ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Demonstrated skills using ArcGIS or QGIS and Excel
  • GPS field training and experience
  • Field experience using differential GPS or GPS with post-processing (asset only)
  • Experience in teaching or teaching-assistant roles and explaining technical issues to a non-technical audience (asset only)
  • Demonstrated skills other GIS platforms such as QGIS, MapInfo etc. (asset only)
  • GIS scripting skills with Python and ArcPy or Python and QGIS (asset only)
  • Competency with AutoCAD or similar tools (asset only)
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities (asset only)
  • Knowledge of cultural protocols, history, and cultural values of Indigenous peoples (asset only)

You must be both an independent self-starter and someone who works well in a team environment. The ability to travel, to work occasional weekend and overtime as required to meet program deadlines and a valid driver’s license are all required.

Above all, you must have proven time management skills, with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines and have excellent interpersonal as well as written and spoken communication skills. New grads are also encouraged to apply.
