The Centre extends their service to a number of different areas, including guardianship, domestic violence, peace and good behavior matters, consumer law, debt, motor vehicle property damage, employment, discrimination, family law, child protection, and criminal and traffic matters. This work is provided for a diverse range of clients including people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, those experiencing domestic or family violence, financial difficulties and homelessness.

About the Opportunity

Cairns Community Legal Centre now has an opportunity for a Social Worker to join their Seniors Legal and Support Service team on a full-time basis.

Working under the guidance of the Centre's Principal Solicitor, you will aim to increase the safety and well-being of senior clients through direct client support. You will also be responsible for the provision of community legal education, promotional work, networking, service development and related activities in raising awareness.

Specific duties will include:

  • Undertaking initial intake via weekly clinics;
  • Attending appointments at outreach locations, home visits and other safe locations;
  • Providing short term counselling, risk assessment, intervention, case management, individual advocacy and court support;
  • Developing and maintaining community education materials;
  • Initiating and providing community education and training to seniors and service providers; and
  • Establishing and maintaining the Centre’s link with relevant networks and organisations.

The successful candidate will require a Bachelor of Social Work and ideally also have proven, relevant experience in a similar position, including demonstrated high level skills in providing counselling, risk assessment, intervention, case management and advocacy.

You must be confident in exercising initiative and appropriate judgement where practices are not clearly defined, and be able to set priorities and monitor work flow in your area. You will be comfortable liaising with members of the public as well as larger organisations, possessing a high level of interpersonal skills. You must also be the holder of a class C driver’s licence, and able to travel as required.

Essentially, this is a support role for a disadvantaged group of people, and the right candidate will be compassionate, dedicated, self-motivated, and looking to bring their skills and experience to those who need it most.
