About the Opportunity 

Methanex currently has an exciting career opportunity for a Laboratory Technician to join our team in Medicine Hat for a temporary term commencing February 2018, with an anticipated duration through March 2019.

In this role, you will be responsible analyzing methanol product, as well as water treatment, in-process and environmental samples to ensure quality control, and expediently report results.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Obtaining and analyzing methanol product samples, reporting product impurities, and generating Certificate of Analysis reports
  • Analyzing process samples, water treatment samples, environment samples, and communicating unexpected and obscure results
  • Coordinating special and non-routine testing requests and providing insight regarding the interpretation of results
  • Operating laboratory instruments including pH meters, spectrophotometers, balances, gas chromatographs, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) units, automatic distillation units (ADU), Karl Fischer Titrators, sulphur analysers, densitometers and ion chromatographs to carry out routine analysis
  • Demonstrating appropriate methods of titration, buret reading, endpoint analysis and peak analysis
  • Calibrating and checking equipment for accuracy, maintaining an accurate record of equipment maintenance, and troubleshooting minor equipment issues
  • Completing daily analysis reports
  • Scrutinizing quality control charts for the purpose of trend analysis and identifying opportunities to enhance lab reliability
  • Developing and validating methods for new analysis
  • Assisting with the development of the laboratory annual budget, and completing inventory management activities on a monthly basis
  • Liaising with lab-related contractors, and facilitating their visits to site (as required)

Our ideal candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Science (with Chemistry as a preferred discipline) or a post-secondary diploma in Chemical Laboratory Technology and five years of related laboratory experience.

Laboratory experience including exposure to chromatography, experience with volumetric flasks, pipets, and automatic pipets, as well as experience with solution and standard preparation, is required and experience in the chemical manufacturing industry is preferred. 

You will also have experience with quality programs, such as ISO 14000 or higher, have knowledge of product analysis quality control, and will have completed quality audit and laboratory-related health, safety and environment training.

You must also have a demonstrated ability to keep accurate and organized records and proficiency with Microsoft Office suite of programs. Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LMIS) and training with statistical software are assets.
