About Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation

The Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is located near scenic Gold River, and the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nations is a member nation of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council which spans all Nuu-chah-nulth-aht peoples. The Mowachaht are originally from Yuquot on Nootka Sound, known as Friendly Cove.

Yuquot (Friendly Cove) is considered to be the centre of the world for all Nootka First Nations on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. Yuquot means “where the winds blow from many directions”. Yuquot village has been designated as a National Historic Site and it is the starting off point for the Nootka Trail, which provides an unparalleled wilderness and marine experience, but also the possibility of catching a glimpse of the island wolves that are a central part of the nation's culture and spirit world.

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Manager of Lands and Economic Development to join the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation in Tsaxana. 

In this senior leadership role, you will manage and coordinate the responsible, sustainable and effective management of MMFN's territory, including lands, water, air and all the resources within, above and below. This role will require a candidate that will work closely with the Council of Chiefs and hold a high regard and respect for MMFN culture, practices, history and traditions. 

Key duties and responsibilities include: 

  • Maintaining mapping and database systems
  • Managing and responding to referrals, permit requests and other inquiries
  • Developing strategic and sustainable economic development plans
  • Preparing and submitting funding proposals 
  • Developing MMFN hunting, fishing and gathering laws, guidelines and protocols
  • Developing MMFN resource management laws, guidelines and protocols 
  • Establishing and maintaining a close working relationship with hunting, fishing and gathering Federal and Provincial enforcement agencies and law-makers
  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships with neighbouring First Nations, districts, villages and municipalities
  • Preparing and submitting all reports to funding agencies, governments and to Council of Chiefs and the MMFN community as required
  • Coordinating the MMFN Resource Council meetings and assisting in the setting up of their administrative needs
  • Supervising staff in the lands department

For this role, we are seeking someone with strong experience in a senior management role, preferably in a First Nation environment. 

Our ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite of applications
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of resource planning and management, and land management issues and legislation affecting First Nations
  • Ability to manage projects and staff
  • Experience with developing policies and procedures
  • A Valid Driver's Licence 

Similarly, strong communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills are essential. As a reliable, respectful and assertive leader, you will focus on building strong working relationships with all staff, neighbouring First Nations and Federal and Provincial enforcement agencies, while upholding and enforcing internal policies and procedures, as required. Above all, you will be a community-oriented and approachable professional with strong leadership skills.
