About Aurukun Shire Council and the Chivaree Centre

The Shire of Aurukun is a local government area in far north Queensland covering more than 7,000 square kilometres. The community of Aurukun is located on the north-west coast of the Cape York Peninsula, 178km (2hrs 30mins) by road south of the mining town of Weipa and 811km (11hrs) from Cairns. Nearly the entire population (99.6%) lives within the township.

The Aurukun Community Home Help – Chivaree Centre – is the approved provider of community aged care and disability services in Aurukun.  The Centre offers services to eligible clients under the Community Home Care and Commonwealth Home Support Programme and Home Care Packages, depending on client needs and required assistance to allow them to stay at home and continue to live independently in their community.  The individual services on offer include:

  • Domestic Assistance;
  • Social Support – for individuals and groups, including culturally appropriate activities;
  • Personal Care;
  • Meals at home and at the Centre;
  • Flexible Respite;
  • Transport;
  • Specialised support services; and
  • Home Maintenance – grass mowing and simple repairs.

About the Opportunity

Aurukun Shire Council now has an opportunity for an Aged Care Manager to oversee the strategic and operational running of the Chivaree Centre based in Aurukun. This is a full-time, 12 month contract position, with potential for renewal after this time.

Reporting to the Director - Community Services and the most senior person on-site at the Centre, your responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Managing all funded Chivaree programs ensuring they comply with all relevant guidelines, legislation, contractual requirements and Aurukun Shire Council (ASC) policy;
  • Monitoring all programs ensuring they are delivered within the ASC budget;
  • Motivating, leading and supporting staff members to deliver a high quality of care and support;
  • Ensuring a consistent standard of quality aligned with Legislative and funding guidelines;
  • Ensuring all WHS guidelines are adhered to and identify and manage risk; and
  • Ensuring all relevant reporting is accurate and submitted in a timely manner.

To be considered for this position you will hold a minimum of a Certificate IV in Aged Care or similar and have demonstrated management experience working in aged care or health. 

You will be a capable and practical manager with the capacity to function at a very high-level in isolated surroundings and with minimal support. You will be an effective team leader, keen to develop the skills and capacity of your staff, while maintaining sensitivity to diverse cultural issues. Your demonstrated ability (or means to learn) to develop systems, plans, protocols and frameworks to support the evolution of sustainable and quality programs will be pivotal to your success.

Importantly, you will possess high level communication skills, and have a focus on providing excellent customer care to all visitors to the Centre.

An attractive remuneration package is on offer circa $80,000 negotiable with experience, plus a range of great benefits including:

  • Housing provided with subsidised rent;
  • Annual airfares back to Cairns (after 6 months of employment);
  • Locality allowance of $4,248.40 pa for singles or $8,496.80 for a person with dependants;
  • Access to a company pool vehicle if required;
  • 8 days isolation leave per year; and
  • Relocation assistance up to $4,000 and repatriation for the same amount.
