About Tiwi College and Melville Island

Located at Pickataramoor on Melville Island, Tiwi College is an exciting and dynamic secondary boarding school initiated and governed by the Tiwi people to provide quality education for the young Tiwi. The college caters for holistic learning for children from both of the Tiwi islands; helping the young Tiwi become "work ready". At Tiwi College, the life skills learned in the Family Group Homes are valued as highly as the academic programs.

A weekly boarding school, where students are dropped off on a Monday and picked up on a Friday, the school IS the community of Pickataramoor. The school currently has 100 students and 48 staff consisting of Teachers, Tiwi Assistant Teachers, Tiwi Academy staff, Family Group Home (boarding) Parents, Hospitality staff, a Fleet Manager, Farm Manager, Maintenance Manager and Groundsman. It is a very close-knit community and as a relatively new school, Tiwi College is well resourced for both staff and students.

Melville Island, part of the Tiwi Islands, lies in the eastern Timor Sea, off the coast of the Northern Territory, Australia. It is west of the Cobourg Peninsula in Arnhem Land and north of Darwin, with a tropical climate. Second only to Tasmania in area, it has a population of just 1,500 people. As a result, the tropical wilderness and secluded beaches are readily accessible, with most staff enjoying weekend camping and fishing. The College enjoys particularly close relationships with and throughout the community, regularly getting involved with sports competitions and activities on the weekends.
