About the Opportunity

The Balonne Shire Council now has an exciting opportunity for a Manager Finance Services to join their busy team in St George, QLD, on a full-time basis. 

Reporting to the Director Finance and Corporate Services, you’ll be primarily responsible for providing financial leadership, development and strategic direction to Council, to enable an effective delivery of financial services to meet the goals of Council's corporate and operational plans. Critically, your key process responsibilities will include:

  • Management accounting;
  • Cost accounting;
  • Asset accounting;
  • Long-term financial planning;
  • Budget;
  • Internal and external audit requirements;
  • Procurement management, compliance and internal controls.

In addition to operational delivery, you will be required to develop strategies that will address the long-term financial sustainability of the organisation including asset management, whole-of-life costing, financial improvement, financing and cost management. 

As this is a leadership role, the successful candidate will also need to have an aptitude for leadership and provide guidance and mentoring support to a small team of 4-6 people including Accounts Payable/Receivable, a Rates Officer and a Procurement Officer.

What we are looking for

This position would be well-suited to an Accountant, Finance Officer or similar, looking for the opportunity to progress their career. 

To be considered for this position you will hold relevant tertiary qualifications in Accounting or similar and have demonstrated experience and knowledge of contemporary financial management and financial sustainability practices. This will include (but not be limited to) cost accounting, management accounting and long-term financial budgeting and planning.

A CA or CPA and/or previous Local Government experience, whilst not mandatory, would be highly regarded.

A strategic thinker with good problem-solving skills, you will have the ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures and legislative requirements - using your initiative to analyse data and make recommendations on solutions. 

Importantly, you will be a personable and driven leader with strong communication skills and the willingness and ability to lead and develop your team to deliver high-quality outcomes.
