About the Opportunity

Methanex has an opening for a Laboratory Technician Summer Student who is interested in expanding their skill set with our team in Medicine Hat, AB, during the summer of 2018 (approximately May 7, 2018 through August 31, 2018). 

Working under the guidance of the Laboratory Supervisor and in collaboration with the laboratory team, this summer student will ensure the safe, effective and efficient completion of chemical and water testing activities, as well as other general laboratory tasks. 

This is open to students who are currently enrolled in post-secondary studies and will be returning to studies upon the completion of the summer term.  

Responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting in providing routine and specialized analytical laboratory support to ensure wastewater material streams, process intermediary streams, and final product streams meet quality requirements
  • Utilizing correct sampling methods, providing prompt data analysis results, and maintaining testing records as per internal and regulatory guidelines
  • Assisting with testing and other activities related to special projects as assigned
  • Assisting laboratory staff as requested
  • Completing housekeeping and other minor equipment maintenance tasks

To qualify for these positions, you will need:

  • Successful completion of first or second-year studies in a Chemical Laboratory Technology diploma program, or second-year studies in an undergraduate chemistry or chemical engineering program
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office

The ideal candidate will be extremely organized and detail oriented with strong time management and prioritization skills. You must also be customer focused and dedicated to meeting the expectations of internal and external customers.

Above all, you must be independently motivated and able to work effectively with minimal supervision with a flexibility and willingness to work in a team environment.

Please note that this position is based on a 10 hour/shift (days) compressed work week schedule with rotating responsibility for weekend shifts. Also, this is a safety sensitive position and will be subject to a pre-placement medical assessment including alcohol/drug testing.
