About the Organisation

The Cairns Community Legal Centre is a non-profit, government-funded community organisation, providing free legal services to a range of disadvantaged clients. 

The Centre extends their service to a number of different areas of law including guardianship, domestic violence, peace and good behavior matters, consumer law, debt, motor vehicle property damage, employment, discrimination, family law, child protection, and criminal and traffic matters.

This work is provided for a diverse range of clients including people with disabilities, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, those experiencing domestic or family violence, financial difficulties and homelessness.

About the Opportunity

The Cairns Community Legal Centre now has an opportunity for a Social Worker to join their Seniors Legal and Support Service team on a full-time basis (38 hours per week).

Working under the guidance of the Centre’s Principal Solicitor, you will aim to increase the safety and well-being of senior clients through direct client support. You will also be responsible for the provision of community legal education, promotional work, networking, service development and related activities in raising awareness.

Specifically duties will include:

  • Undertaking initial intake via weekly clinics;
  • Attending appointments at outreach locations, home visits and other safe locations;
  • Providing short term counselling, risk assessment, intervention, case management, individual advocacy and court support;
  • Developing and maintaining community education materials;
  • Initiating and providing community education and training to seniors and service providers; and
  • Establishing and maintaining the Centre’s link with relevant networks and organisations.

As a member of the Centre’s team you’ll also share workloads with your colleagues, and be actively involved in promotional and other activities aimed at the ongoing development of the Centre services, and which seek to meet its corporate goals.

About you

To be considered you will require a Bachelor of Social Work Degree (or Masters of Social Work (qualifying)) or other relevant qualification recognised by the AASW as comparable to an AASW approved social work qualification, combined with relevant experience gained as a Social Worker.

In addition you must hold a Class C driver’s licence, and be able to travel as required.

The successful candidate will also be an adaptable individual, with the ability to respond to emerging demands. A strong team player, you'll demonstrate a positive attitude and enthusiastically accept new challenges as they arise. Well developed interpersonal and communication skills will be key for your success, as will the ability to effectively manage competing priorities.

Importantly, you'll be passionate about the work, and will have a genuine interest in working to help people who are experiencing disadvantage.
