About the Organization

Created in 2008 and privately held, Harmac Pacific Pulp operates a Northern Bleached Softwood Kraft pulp mill on the east coast of Vancouver Island near Nanaimo, BC. Nanaimo Forest Products (NFP) Ltd., the owner of the Harmac Pacific trademark, restarted the mill with a single production line on October 3, 2008. Since that time the mill has grown to two production lines and a capacity of 370,000 tonnes of world class pulp per year.

Key to the Harmac’s success is the employee ownership model. Our employees are very active participants in the running of the business and have 2 members that they appoint to the company’s 6 seats on its Board of Directors. 

The future of Harmac Pacific Pulp is looking bright. Through extensive capital investments, the organization has made significant improvements to productivity and reliability. In addition, as of 2013, instillation has been complete of a 25 MW Green Energy turbo-generator which we currently use to sell power to BC Hydro.

About the Opportunity

Currently, Harmac has an exciting opening for a Production Supervisor to join our 370,000 tonne per year pulp mill in Nanaimo, BC

With direction from the Production Manager, you will provide supervision to support the objectives of the Production Department on the four operating shifts. 

Specifically, your responsibilities will include:

  • Directing the activities of the Fibre Handling, Digesters, Washers, Recaust/Kilns, Bleach Plants, and Machine Room on the assigned shift
  • Coordinating chip supply to the operation including scow and truck unloading, chip pile reclaim, and chip stockpiling
  • Coordinating maintenance activities on the off-shifts
  • Conveying production requirement information and scheduled changes to the appropriate people in each department
  • Coordinating the activities in the Pulp Mill with the Steam Plant
  • Identifying problems affecting the volume and quality of production by monitoring the various control and reporting systems in the plant and initiating corrective action when required
  • Organizing and carryout the scheduling and allocation of shift crews
  • Ensuring proper orientation, training, and time records are maintained for all supervised crew members, and deal with complaints and grievances brought forward by members of the crew
  • Identifying opportunities to improve the effectiveness of the operation and make recommendations to the Production Manager and Area Production Supervisors
  • Carrying out projects and administrative activities to support the objectives set out by the Production Department
  • Ensuring a high standard for compliance of employees to safe work practices and safety regulations

To qualify for this role, you will need to have a strong background in Pulp manufacturing and/or Maintenance of Pulp process equipment. Additionally, this position calls for a tech-savvy individual with satisfactory working knowledge of desktop computer software applications.  

It is important that you have experience in developing job procedures and training systems. Crucial to your success will be demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills along with the ability to show initiative on the job. Your excellent verbal and written communications skills will come in handy as you will need to work with a variety of stakeholders, as well as within a team environment.
