Nunkuwarrin Yunti is the foremost Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation in Adelaide, South Australia, providing a range of health care and community support services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Primary Care Services provides comprehensive primary health care to the Aboriginal community. The multi­disciplinary team consists of Aboriginal Health Workers and Practitioners, a Clinical Services Officer, Nurses, General Practitioners and Registrars. Services are augmented by a range of visiting medical specialists and allied health professionals. The PCS team liaises and works closely with the Women, Children and Family Health program, the Social and Emotional Wellbeing program and the Community Health Promotion and Education program to ensure a high standard of integrated and coordinated client care.

About the Opportunity

Nunkuwarrin Yunti now has an exciting leadership opportunity for a Senior Aboriginal Health Practitioner to join their multidisciplinary team on a full-time basis.  

Reporting to the Clinical Services Coordinator, your overarching responsibility in this position will draw on your excellent skills and experience as a senior practitioner. You will demonstrate the ability to enhance the Aboriginal Health workforce’s clinical skills and knowledge and further the development of the workforce. In addition, you will be a leader in ensuring Primary Care Services is operating within a culturally safe framework and facilitate Primary Care Services’ health promotion activity.

In order to deliver this, some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing clinical education and supervision, mentoring and supporting staff and students;
  • According to operational requirements, deliver high-quality comprehensive primary health care;
  • Providing culturally safe and specific advice to non-Indigenous PCS staff;
  • Leading health promotion activities with the organisation’s Health Services teams; and
  • Representing Nunkuwarrin Yunti with other bodies and/or members of the public, including liaising with AHPRA and their affiliate networks.

What you need to succeed

To be considered for this position you will be required to:

  • Hold AHPRA registration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Practice Board of Australia as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner;
  • Have proven experience working as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner in a primary health care setting;
  • Have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the contemporary issues and their impacts on Aboriginal people and society;
  • Lead by example, engage and educate employees on culturally appropriate best practice; and
  • Be a conduit between both internal teams and external stakeholders; strong verbal and written communication skills will be critical to your success in this role.
