About Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service and the Strong Indigenous Families Program

Established in 1972, Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service is a community controlled Aboriginal Medical Service located in Katherine, in the Top End of the Northern Territory.

Over the years, Wurli has expanded its focus, taking on a more holistic approach to the provision of health care through their numerous clinical and other programs that focus on social and emotional wellbeing. These programs include men’s health, women’s health, family support, social and emotional wellbeing, alcohol and other drugs services, justice services and chronic disease; all of which compliment a strong core commitment to high quality and responsive care services.

Strong Indigenous Families is a program designed to:

  • Provide intensive family-focused case management, to address the behaviours that lead to domestic and family violence that affect family safety;
  • Deliver trauma-informed therapeutic services for Indigenous Children affected by family violence; and
  • Break the cycle of domestic and family violence and child removal from families.

About the Opportunity

Wurli-Wurlinjang Health Service now has a rewarding opportunity for a full-time Counsellor (Child Trauma / Family Violence) to join their team in Katherine, NT. 

Reporting to the Program Coordinator and working within a cross-skilled service team, this role will see you developing interpersonal relationships with women and children in Katherine and the surrounding communities, to enable them to develop self-understanding and to make changes in their lives.

You'll operate within a framework that is culturally appropriate and trauma informed, and will provide services within an intervention and recovery model, ensuring a focus on creating a better future for your clients.

Key responsibilities of this pivotal role include:

  • Providing counselling sessions that apply theoretical knowledge of complex trauma and/or crisis interventions;
  • Assisting with skill development in the areas of coping mechanisms, mediation, conflict resolution, anger management, grief and loss as well as health and wellbeing promotion;
  • Identifying and providing strategies to assist in keeping women and children safe;
  • Ensuring interventions are clearly linked to an appropriate treatment plan, which is continuously monitored and evaluated for effectiveness;
  • Identifying and developing focus groups, return to country days, group therapy and/or other community activities; and
  • Engaging and working closely with the Community Engagement Support Officer (CESO) to assist with bridging cultural and language gaps.

About You

Wurli is seeking candidates who possess a Diploma (minimum) in Counselling or similar, relevant qualifications. A background in trauma informed counselling is required, including the demonstrated ability to assess for, and manage complex trauma. An understanding of domestic and family violence, emotional trauma, and experience providing counselling services to both women and children, will be essential.

Due to the nature of the role, it is important you have demonstrated experience working within a service delivery model which recognises people's capacity for change. You'll be knowledgeable about, and comfortable operating within, a well-developed practice framework that allows for recovery. 

The successful candidate will have particular experience working with Indigenous communities and families, and knowledge of issues effecting Indigenous people in contemporary Australian Society. You'll be tactile, respectful and flexible in your approach, ensuring culturally safe delivery of services that focus on the needs of the client.

As this role involves a variety of counselling services, including education and group work within the community, it's important you be flexible and have excellent time management skills. 

Please Note: You will be required to obtain a National Police Records Check, Working with Children’s Clearance, and current Driver’s License prior to commencing employment.
