About the Opportunity

Coonamble Shire Council now has a full-time opportunity for a GIS/Survey & Design Officer to join their Engineering Services team in Coonamble, New South Wales.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering Services, you will be responsible for supporting the development and capture of GIS information for Council's infrastructure and assets through conducting GIS Surveys and maintenance of Council's databases and mapping software. You will also support Council's Engineering Services team in the survey and design of infrastructure and assets as required.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Ensuring that Council's Base Cadastral layer is current by developing and maintaining the base cadastre and other layers within GIS software;
  • Creating additional datasets and revising existing layers of the GIS information through the maintenance of layers;
  • Undertaking mapping work for internal clients by providing mapping solutions to an agreed brief and assisting with training corporate staff;
  • Liaising with consultants, contractors, suppliers, public agencies, and other authorities to achieve quality outcomes;
  • Providing excellent customer service to both internal and external clients; and
  • Preparing information and compiling records as requested.

To be successful in this role, you will need to hold a Bachelor of Surveying, BSc Geography, or equivalent Diploma of Spatial Information Services. 

Candidates who do not hold a relevant qualification, but who do have demonstrated experience as a GIS Officer (preferably within local government) will also be considered.

In addition, you will need previous experience in spatial analysis editing and mapping production capabilities including web mapping protocols. It is essential that you are proficient in the use of Mapinfo and Exponair.

An exposure to GPS data acquisition for project-based work and experience or knowledge of current GPS technology with the ability to plan and execute GPS surveys will be key to your success in this role.

While not essential, candidates with previous experience in local government will be held in high regard. As will any experience with RTK and static field survey methods and assets management systems.

Most importantly, you will be a team player with a high level of motivation and excellent communication skills. You will also have the ability to work autonomously when required and execute all tasks with accuracy, efficiency, and diligence. Your ability to perform manual tasks with dexterity, including general construction and machine operation will also contribute to your success in this role.
